Listen man I'm 20 and I put up with jerks all day at work. You have to keep your pride and keep your head up high and never back down. Don't give up man because people try to tell you that you'll never amount to anything, but a chemist, but you have to have dreams man. You have to have goals. Whether that goal is to start a family or become a rock n roll star. You have to have dreams and ambitions and you have to help people and care for one another. Don't people a pompous jerk like that dude. Play with your thumb. I play with my thumb. I have every beatles album practically and I'm a huge McCartney fan. Keep the dream alive!

The problem is this is america where the bigots take over.

America is capitalized, as it is both the name of my country and a proper noun. And what in the name of all that is Holy has bigotry got to do with a ding dong making a dumb comment about bass playing? And as a point of historical fact, even if you go under the mistaken impression that the confederacy was all about racism, they didn't take over. If you feel a need to knock America and vent about what a racist evil country it is, take that to the huffington post forums. This is a musician site.

Your second bit about knocking some dude in the face makes snese though. My dad always told me that if one of two guys really wants a fight, there is gonna be one. Might as well oblige em, and don't be that guy.

dude ive had people tell me this about my slap technique as well as my muting technique and the best way to shut people up (especialy cocky douchbags who wank) is to just shut up and play a walking bassline over a detailed chord progression. they ether get bored and **** off or if they have any sense they realize that they are idiots then **** off.

im the only bass player i know who isnt 60 years old who plays that way. its became a lost art

There is a guy around here in a Cream/Clapton cover band who also plays only with his thumb. He's a very good bass player btw. Yes, he's older but so what? Maybe it is becoming a lost art, but anyone who palm mutes probably uses their thumb quite a bit.

You owe it to yourself to play the way that is the most comfortable for you. Be secure that you are doing the right thing for YOU, and you won't care what anyone else thinks about it.

If you spend time worrying about all the jerks and pinheads in the world, you are not going to have much time concentrating on things that really deserve your time. Brush it off and move on. You are letting him take up space in your head, rent free. Dude is probably pretty miserable and is just looking to make others the same.

And finally, if he has a problem with your playing, that is his problem, not yours. Don't make it yours. His opinion of your playing is really none of your business, unless he is signing a paycheck for you.
