i dont play with my thumb exclusive but i do incorperate it where i it feels right. its great for real bouncy all over the place lines and saves me all kinds of wrist wear and tear when going using all 4 strings. i really wish some Dbag in GC would pop off. i have gotten comments on my "different" technique but never any negative. if you colse your eyes youd never tell i was using my thumb

exactly i make it sound good so what does it matter how it get to that point

Ignore the moron. There are a few stages to ignoring them. The key is to realize that the reason they do this is to get a reaction. I know it soundds cliched, but it's true.

  1. Moron annoyes you.
  2. You ignore him.
  3. Moron tries again.
  4. You ignore him.
  5. Moron tries harder to annoy you.
  6. You ignore him.
  7. Moron realizes this is pointless, gives up, and quits annoying you.
  8. YOU WIN!

Most people give up on this because they don't realize why the moron starts pushing harder. They do it because they realize that what they were doing isn't working, so they try something that they think has a better chance of working. Eventually they will realize that what they're doing ISN'T WORKING, and stop. The best comeack in the world won't do the job silence will. Think of it this way, how long would you work at the local Wal-Mart after you're fired. You're not getting paid, and chances are you don't particularly like the job, so why waaste the effort. After a while, the morons realize they've been fired. And you walk away without doing a single thing.

I would have looked at the guy, pulled out my cell phone and said "I had a dentist appointment in half an hour, but you've just inspired me to reschedule. Yes you may have the amp when I am finished." :)

I don't know what amp you were playing on, but surely there was a (Insert Sub-Par Amp Brand) combo he could have checked out while he waited.
Behringer!

Well GC isnt such a bad place.....but youre right there are some idiots that come into work that have no business in there and are very rude to customers such as yourself. That being said you should have told him to go *!#$ himself. Dont let the one jackass ruin your style of playing.. thats what makes us all unique.

When I first started hitting coffee houses to play solo tunes in the 90's the MC's would ask me if I was going to tell jokes or something. They didn't understand solo bass at the time. Then I'd blow them away and politely thank them for letting me get up there.

My point being don't change what you are doing. I've gotten more gigs and recordings due to my style and sound than I would have if I sounded like everyone else. The reason why we bassists often reference other bassists as our influences is because of their originality. Like them or hate them guys like Vic, Les, Jaco, Stanley, etc... are famous and offer tremendous influence because of their originality.

If you were on a beach that dude would have been kicking sand in your face. Side note, learn to look someone in the eye and tell them **** Off and mean it :)

That skill will also help you get paid at some gigs :)

Doesn't Sting also play bass with his thumb? And he also plays upright, so he MUST know what he is doing! :-)

So lets see: Sting + McCartney = 2 huge fortunes. Maybe we should all be playing with our thumbs!

Oh, let me guess, when the guy at GC said "let me play that thing" he whipped out a pick, right? Hey, picks are not for bass!

:-)

I ain't the smartest guy around but if there's one thing in my life that I've learned, it's this: you can't reason with a bully. Bullys are bullys because pushovers exist.

Not exactly. Bullies are bullies because they're rectal orificies. However, reasoning with them *is* pointless. Best to either completely ignore their presence, which denies them the pleasure of a reaction, or to immediately get in their face and go on the offensive, which most of the time will expose the fact that they're all bark and no bite (just hope you don't get one of the 5% that can and will back up their BS with physical harm).

Given those two choices, it's probably best to ignore people like that, and I mean you act as if they literally don't exist. You don't see them, you don't hear them, they're a complete non-presence. You can get a lot of entertainment value by watching them get pissed off that they're getting ZERO reaction from you.

And obviously this particular asshat knows nothing about the history of electric bass, ridiculing you for using a technique that helped launch the instrument.

Hey OP, I wish I was better at playing with my thumb. I'm working on it as a technique. It's such a cool, muddy sound and it's so perfect for some songs. Be proud that you're an individual. You would have been well within your rights to punch that fool right in the throat, but kudos to you for keeping your cool. You've proven to be a better person, and a better musician than that jerk

im glad to see my fellow bass players saying that they also use their thumbs. if you go to other sites that arent ran by bass players like tb they make it sound as if theres 5 ppl in the whole world who use their thumbs. there were some pertty b.a bass players who used their thumbs, paul mccartney, bruce palmer and monk montgomery. if you have nvr heard monk play check out this link he has a very cool sound. its just too bad that of the 3 bassists i listed only paul is still alive :(

Sorry guys, but I'm closing this. I'm guessing this is a sensitive subject for a lot of you, as half of the folks in this thread have forgotten or ignored Rule #2, even after my in-thread reminder, and I'm not going to send out another dozen rule reminder PMs.
