That guy is just a douche. Though it is kind of your fault for being a pushover and letting him get what he wanted.

Anyway, just play the way you want to play. If you can play some sick pentatonic scales, then everyone will bow down to you. (At least the people who don't play an insturment, which is most hot girls.)

Its all a mind game man. Like John Lennon said "We're playin those mind games together, pushin the barrier and plantin seeds." Look what happened to him. He moved to America expressed himself. Tried to spread peace and they shot him. I work in retail and all day long we get the rudest customers and its absolutely ridiculous. Enough is enough already. I swear to god if I ever die and leave this planet and float around as a spirit I am going to haunt rude customers and jerk offs until they loose their minds. Maybe thats what happens to schizophrenics!?

Don't ignore people like that. That makes them push you harder. Don't say "excuse me" or "I'm sorry" or anything else apologetic. Get in the mother _ _ _ _ _ _ _ '_ face and let him know in no uncertain terms that in fact you are the meanest and nastiest mother _ _ _ _ _ _ in the place and if he so much as looks at you while you're thumbing that bass, they will need the state police for you and the coroner for him because you will, in fact, stomp his _ _ _ until your boot soles wear out.


And mean it.

Some on here will roll eyes and tell you that's the last thing you want to do but that's the way I handle myself and I guarantee no one has ever talked to me like that.

I ain't the smartest guy around but if there's one thing in my life that I've learned, it's this: you can't reason with a bully. Bullys are bullys because pushovers exist.

i strongly dislike when people in music stores try to give advice on playing, whether in a rude manner like this, or even in veiled politness.
when i first started playing, i was very into punk rock and pop punk. i played a lot with a pick. and nearly everytime i was testing out an amp some wiser gentleman would come along and tell me, "real bassists don't use picks". i never told anyone i was a real bassist.
as i've expanded my listening horizons i've attempted to expand my playing styles, but still find picking very useful in certain songs. i guess i must not be a real bassist yet. i'm fine with that :-)

and man, keep on thumpin it mccartney style. as long as it suits your needs and sounds good to your ears, that's what really matters!

I play for money most of the time, and there are times when producers and bands pass on me. If I let that effect me and it causes me to just shut in, then what good does that do? Fu*k em dude. Learn those songs, and next time you see him, just stare him down and play it 100 times better than he ever could. Seriously, don't take this too hard. Have some self confidence, and who cares what someone else, especially a douche like that has to say.

I would have looked at the guy, pulled out my cell phone and said "I had a dentist appointment in half an hour, but you've just inspired me to reschedule. Yes you may have the amp when I am finished." :)

I don't know what amp you were playing on, but surely there was a (Insert Sub-Par Amp Brand) combo he could have checked out while he waited.

really dude. I wouldn't have even moved away from the amp. If thats the way you play, and thats the way you feel comfortable, then totally go for it. And i would have beat the guy for just playing that....yea....no. Don't let little things like that get in the way of your playing. Don't stop playing in front of people just because someone (and i emphasize someONE) put you down. Thats definitely going to happen in the music world. It happens to everyone. And i completely understand your feelings. ugh. don't even pay them any mind.
