no class bass player at guitar center

Hmmm ... a Jackass at guitar center ... geee what are the odds of that!

Too funny. There does always seem to be jackass in the store somewhere. One time I was in the bass room, and there was a guy who walked in looking like he was ready to try out for a southern rock band. He was wearing all black western clothes and a black cowboy hat. He grabbed a Fender P-bass, plugged into an amp, and started banging on the low E string at high volume. He just kept going up and down the low E, never touched any other string, and never played anything resembling any part of a song. Everyone was so happy that he chose to turn it up so loud so we could all enjoy his crappy playing. I can never figure out why the people who can't play always want to crank it up. ;)

I believe the intro to Smoke On The Water walks up to the G and hangs there. Now that's what I call impressive! Shheesshh.....

rofl, i was thinking the same thing, but hey.. it's the timing of when the bass comes in that sends shivers down the spine.

Don't ignore people like that. That makes them push you harder. Don't say "excuse me" or "I'm sorry" or anything else apologetic. Get in the mother _ _ _ _ _ _ _ '_ face and let him know in no uncertain terms that in fact you are the meanest and nastiest mother _ _ _ _ _ _ in the place and if he so much as looks at you while you're thumbing that bass, they will need the state police for you and the coroner for him because you will, in fact, stomp his _ _ _ until your boot soles wear out.

And mean it.

Some on here will roll eyes and tell you that's the last thing you want to do but that's the way I handle myself and I guarantee no one has ever talked to me like that.

I ain't the smartest guy around but if there's one thing in my life that I've learned, it's this: you can't reason with a bully. Bullys are bullys because pushovers exist.

samuel l. jackson... is that you? i didn't know you were on talk bass. lol, good stuff :D

anyway op you keep on thumbing that bass, and next time thumb your nose at him too.

just get good enough at playing with your thumb that you can destroy anyone playing with two fingers. Jamerson just used his index finger, and he would probably get **** about that today, that is, until he ripped whoever was dissing him a new one with his playing.

there will always be idiots and ******** in this world. we're not used to having them be bassists, but statistically, there's gotta be a few out there. Just let your playing do the talking and the retards will eventually shut up.

I love experimenting, I love solo bass, I love flashy technique and experimenting with effects. However, at the end of the day most of us who make much money of even forge careers in bass guitar will do so by playing roots and 5th's.

If your playing in the style of Paul McCartney and doing it well then your playing the fundamental role of the bass player and that's a good thing. I can't see anything wrong with using that technique as long as it isn't doing harm to your hands.

Man, just have fun and find some people to play with whose music can be supported by your sound, technique and style. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!

the idea of walking up to a stranger at GC to criticize their picking/plucking technique seems it would be just like walking up to someone and dissing them because they have red hair.

personally, my reply would have been along the lines of "i'm just using my thumb, since i wore out my fingers on your mom last night."

"no class bass player at guitar center" that's like saying you saw a monkey at the zoo. What I don't understand is why you gave up the bass and amp to him? Grow a pair and stand up for yourself. You have as much right to play it as the next guy even if he's better than you (and I take it this guy wasn't).

I'll go in GC once in a while just for fun but I don't really shop there. I seems like no matter when you go there are a bunch of people playing loudly and most not very good. You get the kid with the greasy hair shredding on metallica in the guitar section and some guy slappin 'n poppin on a bass with no sense of time, usually it's a freak show. Most of the gigging players I know go to music stores where they have a long standing relationship. You get the service and attention of the owner who has invested his life in his business. The prices are usually the same or better than GC with the exception of their "loss leaders" and closeouts. Most importantly you're putting money into your community and making sure that great music store is around next year. And in my experience they don't have much patience for block heads.

ive posted related topics about this before but i continue to get critized about my playing style. i have no plans on changing my style but it pi**es me off when when i was playing at guitar center playing with my thumb as mccartnay does and this bass player comes up to me and goes you dont know even know how to f***ing play right let me use that amp and go take some lessons stupid. can u guys belive that?? then he proceeded to pick up a $800 fender play the intro to iron man and smoke on the water and then leave. ive dealt with people dissing me as long as ive been playing but this one was by far the worst experince ive ever had in music and now i really dont know if i wanna play otside of my house anymore. i know i can play but im just getting tired of everyone suddenly become a bassgod when they watch me play.

my question for my bass brothers and sisters is how should i handle this? should i change what im doing to a more accepted modren playing style?

for those who have never noticed it ive attached a link to show you how i play execpt im right handed while paul is lefty

You need not change a thing. If that guy would have said that to me ,he would not have played that day at all. dont let someone disrespect you.
Had he said go take some lessons Stupid to me ==he would of had a day thats memory lasted a life time.

From your profile, you're 17. You'll grow more resistant to jerks as time passes.

Play as you prefer, but there's nothing wrong with learning other technique's also.
Best response would have been to switch styles and play something in different technique's.
