Whatever, I have an AmStd P, its great, I love it, but a lot of Fenders suck too oh great endorsing artist. Stop living in absolutes, there is good and bad in everything.

For what it's worth, I have never seen a gibson bass up close and in person. A few Epiphones, but no Gibsons...

The V bass is going to be offered as a five string too it seems. Still doesn't make the name any less confusing for the four stringer.
Gibson basses don't need me to defend them. The recordings from Little Richard and Cream through the Who and up until Nirvana and Government Mule speak for them selves.

It's Gibson's fault. They don't put the same amount of attention or advertising into Basses as they do Guitars. I got curious to see what they had to offer this year for basses. Oh what a suprise... 2 model of a 40+ y/o body or you can get a different 40 y/o body in 4 or 5 string. They've really revolutionized the bass industry and broken out of the box making a 5 string variant, eyeroll

You might look here Gibson Bass Guitars and spend a few minutes to actually check and see how many very different basses Gibson has produced over the years.
I know what you mean. New ones are not common in my town, and vintage ones are quite uncommon indeed. There seem to be many more Epiphones than Gibsons in the stores. I was a Fender guy for years and never contemplated buying a Gibson (for all the reasons that others have mentioned: heavy, expensive, neck dive, unusual looks) until I found my first Gibson Victory. Within a week I had bought my second. I have owned and played a number of Fender Precisions, but my Gibsons are really something special.
Since then I have been testing Gibson basses wherever I can find them, and there is much that disappoints but a lot to like. I am not a huge fan of the SG bass or the Les Paul bass (ergonomics and neck dive), but the Thunderbirds are really nice, and the Midtown and ES 335 just make me weak at the knees.
Overall, while the Gibson product line can be very hit and miss, they are still producing some really good stuff.
I disagree.I got my SG Special for $700.I think that is a more than fair price for an American made instrument
I did exactly that when I purchased mine and it blew every p bass in the place away that day.I had been shopping for a pbass.Knew exactly what I thought I wanted anyway.AmStd,Olympic white,red pearloid pick guard with a maple neck.Went to 3 stores that day playing every pbass I could find.Last one actually had the exact one I was looking for.Play it and meh...Played the Gibby that was hanging next to it and didn't play anything else.

I think you do have a valid point, but the same criticism applies to other manufacturers. For years, Gibson has been (or was) doing battle with Fender in the "traditional looking" bass market.
Maybe the new V-bass is a sign of Gibson trying something new.

Well, the OPs question is one I have pondered. I don't love all basses but for no other brand have I picked-up and consistently thought "***????".
It is not from a lack of trying. I was at a rehearsal studio recently and excitedly asked to test a Gibson bass they had; I tested it, then excitedly put it down and picked up my Ric.
The same scenario at a shop with regard to TBs of both the Gibson and Epiphone variety, plus EB'ish basses.
I can appreciate most basses (even if I don't actually like them) though Gibsons nearly always escape me - I am lucky I guess because they are not cheap.
Variety is what makes life exciting, and it is good to keep experimenting with different stuff (even if it just reinforces our preferences). I too have found Gibson to be more inconsistent than other brands. But I do love it when they get it right!
