A couple of days ago bassybill posted this topic over in the Lounge:

I don't think he was expecting what I asked him.

You see, I've been trying for over a month to get my hands on a certain compression driver that is sold-out here in the US, but theoretically available from a few vendors in Europe. I say "theoretically" because none of them would deal with me. I watched helplessly as first one and than another of these vendors also sold out. Two units left in the UK. And then I saw bassybill's post, and posted my question (which was really a request, but I tried to make it look like just a question).

Within maybe an hour or so of our first PM exchange, he had ordered them for me!! I offered him a 25% commission for his time and effort and he declined, so at this point I owe him one bigtime.

On top of being a moderator, bassybill jumped right on this and took care of a time-consuming request, snagging me the last pair of this compression driver in the UK. Not many people are that on-the-ball, get-it-done now, not even when they're getting paid for it - and bassybill did this for a complete stranger, just because I was a fellow TalkBass member!

What a strong core this community has!

Yes, that's what really struck me. Bill jumped right in there right now and helped me out, and I think the community here should know about it. That's the kind of people we have devoting their energy to bringing this thing to life.

Speaking as one who has consumed goodly amounts of fish & chips - in the greater London metro area, as well as throughout various parts of the American Midwest - (and found that the latter hardly compares with the former), I can tell you that it will be infinitely more rewarding - for all concerned - to bring the Ohioan to the fish & chips...rather than export the fish & chips to the Ohioan...

Right. Stick the guy on the next plane out, and we'll fill him full of fish and chips when he gets here.

London isn't traditionally a "fish and chips" location, although it's definitely possible to get some good versions of this in the city. But places like Blackpool, Grimsby and other seaside towns are considered to be THE places to enjoy this delicacy. Many's the times I've stood around in Grimsby warming myself through by eating red hot fish and chips on a freezing cold day after travelling up there to see my local football team play away from home. That east wind off the North Sea bites straight through you, and the football ground is right next to the coast and bears the full brunt of it. Brrrrrr.

The equivalent traditional fayre in London would be pie and mash (eel pie and mashed potatoes, served with a pale green sauce known as "liquor" - the green colour comes from the fresh parsley used in it).

Btw...Fish and Chips on Blackpool seafront in the middle of November is about as good as it gets.
