No thanks, we don't do it for money...

Hell, we did a free gig the past Friday night and wound up getting $100 a man for two sets...the bass player owes you guys $100

If your bass player isn't the band's leader, and acted without your consent, he's a unilateralist; watch your back!

+1. I wouldn't want a guy in my band who thought he could give away the rest of the band's money. Bad bad sign. Even apart from this, the story is kind of like a waitress giving people back their tips.

Brings up a good point, that most self-centered greedy folk seem to have forgot- once upon a time at weddings, parties, etc... people actually TIPPED THE FREAKING BAND.

Not nowadays, people are just way too tight and cheap, we played a wedding for 3 hours, for real cheap, because it was a friend, and we thought we'd make out on tips, WRONG.
WE got a measley $30-40 to divide between 4 people.

I saw a band once that upon finishing up the crowd wanted more so the Band leader says "im gonna pass my hat around for tips" implying that they were gonna play another set for tips. well holy ****, they filled that hat with like 200$ real quick. being that the gig only paid 400, id say they did pretty well.

looking back, I bet it hurt the bartenders tips by doing that. It was like 1am and most of the hat money came right off the bar.

nice to see the DGATB acronym still showing up ;)

It's pretty poor form (IMO) to expect tips when working private functions. If the pay isn't good enough, then don't take the gig. I've been playing for decades, and would never expect a tip at a such a gig. If the host's guests want more music, and the host is agreeable, that's something to be negotiated with the host (for 20 minutes I'd let it slide) but NOT his guests.

So on the weekend we are playing at a party, 8-midnight type of thing. We do the gig on the cheap side cause its for a friend I know through work and that is sweet with the other guys.
Bearing in mind that earlier this particular day, we spent near on $1500 on PA gear to finish off our setup.

So as we announce out last song, DGATB boldly states that we will gain the princely sum of $100 to keep on for 20 mins. I take a quick look at they boys to see if they are on board and get a couple of quick nods of approval.

So we finish up (about 30 mins) and I go have a leak. When I get back, our bass player tells me he gave the guy his money back cause he "couldn't do it".

***!!!!!

He is undermining the band.
At the very least i would have a good 'talk' with him.

Its $100 bucks split up what, 3,4,5 ways?? get over it

It may not be big money, but personally I'm not generally happy when someone lifts $25 from my pocket and gives it away without asking me. I wouldn't quit the band or fire him or anything over one episode, but it is a red flag and the OP should give this guy the talk.
