No treble on precision

Are precisions supposed to sound this muffled? This is with the tone knob all the way up. (see attachment)

No, that's too muffled even for a P with flats. I'd say maybe a dirty jack or dirty pots, or possibly even something faulty about the pickup or a pot. If the tone pot is not actually faulty then maybe a different value would help open up those highs.

It's probably the pots. They're stock SX and I've heard are not one of the better parts of SX basses. What should I replace them with? (don't know much about electronics, but I know how to solder)

This is flat, straight into my computer. I know it's not coloring the sound because I recorded my ATK as well and the treble is coming through just fine there.

I dunno-doesn't sound that far off to me. If you listen to the pops there's definitely some crackle there. Maybe a shorted tone pot, but I'd bet new strings would fix it.

I got a wiring harness from Bayou Cables. Quality harness's are one of the best improvements you can to to an inexpensive bass. i have this one in my Pbass.

I just realized, could I use a J harness and instead of the front J pup wired I use the P wired in series?

How old/dead are the strings?

Not very, they're only a couple months old and they're Elixirs(coated) and they still sound bright acoustically. They're not the problem.

I replaced the tone pot with the one from a kit with 250k.

It sounds the same to me. Do I need to replace all of them?

I go with Dmusic148 - have to say that sounds like Precision with flat EQ to me - it sounds like mine anyway!!. If you want a brighter sound, I'd go for a lighter/brighter set of strings - have you tried Rotosound RS66LDs - "used and recommended by John Entwistle" - as it used to say on the packet?.

You say the bass sounds fine acoustically - that's a good thing. That means that the instrument is basically sound, and your only issue is electronics. P-bass electronics are about as simple as they get. Try using 500k pots instead of 250k to add brightness. Might also consider a bypass switch (pickup straight to jack).

I would try temporarily soldering the pickup straight to the jack. If that doesn't solve your problem, it is not the pots.
