NOBD: Peavey T-40

No Idea on the value, but there's a nice looking one on local CL, asking $450?

If it's in really good shape, that's probably a reasonable price. I paid $800, which is about twice what a good T-40 should be expected to sell for, but mine had an unusual combination of things that I'd been looking for that made for a reasonably rare instrument I wasn't likely to find again, along with the (hard to find) older-style OHSC in decent condition. It's not quite a museum piece like ggoat!!!'s, but I'm happy with it.

You can't really see in the photos, but both pickup rings are cracked. Thanks for the link - I'd already known about it, and it was the first place I went looking for rings when the bass got here. I'm thinking about a set of the anodized aluminum ones (let's see THOSE crack!), and perhaps an anodized-texture pickguard to match.

I had some laser cut from plastic from a build that used T40 pickups. It was just as expensive to order a few sets as it was to order a single ring. So if you want, I will sell you a set for way cheaper than $18 a ring, just cover cost and shipping, I may also have a set of stock rings that are not cracked, but they were to worn to use on a new build, you can have them for the cost of shipping if I can find them. PM me and we can talk about it

Here is a picture of one of the rings I had made. They are a lower profile and cut from a flat piece of plastic, instead of molded like the stock ones, they shouldn't crack nearly as easily as the stock ones do.

I put the coil splits on push/pull pots so it can run the humbuckers with the tone full on, even more sounds available with that set up.

Great find, Gremlin! I've always thought that the classic natural finish was THE look for the T-40, but of the three that I've owned, my sienna burst was "The One".

They are pretty close to the Jazz bass spacing. Its wired in full humbucker mode, non splittable VVT. It sounds pretty huge, those pickups are very hot.

It's a very wide neck. So wide that I converted mine to 5 string just because I didn't like how wide it was when I went back and forth between my 5 and my 4

In other news, relating to your comment about the natural finish - I picked up another T today, this time in natural. It's not in nearly as good condition as the Sienna, but it's a '78 with a six-digit serial number and the original rectangular case, and at a much more reasonable price. It works fine and sounds great, but is going to need a lot of cleaning and general TLC. And replacement pickup rings, just like the Sienna. Dammit.
