Noble Amps Preamp

Thanks for the responses, guys.

I usually add a small amount of Bass and Treble, but nothing beyond the 8-9 o’clock mark.

Ukiah’s +6 db comment makes a lot of sense, as the engineers always seem to be unplugging their house DI to use the Noble. I’d bet the engineer has the level set to the house equipment and that 6db bump is enough to push the signal slightly into the red

I just wanted to share some thoughts of my first 24 hours with my Noble. After first plugging it in, I was pleased with the sound, but not blown away. I’m playing with only my Fodera Monarch P, Genzler Magellan, through two Berg Reference 112’s. I’m used to having a pretty good sound, having played professionally for 48 years and always seeking, and usually finding what I consider great tone. I couldn’t always afford the absolute best, but I also refused to let my equipment ever be my “weakest component.”

I plugged into the effects return and input jacks and found a really nice sound after playing for a bit. I found the longer I played, the more richness the sound seemed to have. I was starting to hear some really nice harmonics also. I kept fiddling with the controls and found one really cool tone after another.

Now…I was starting to get “blown away!” I cranked up the volume close to where I think I would play in a medium sized club and the sound kept getting richer, punchier, warmer, and more articulate…all things that I crave when looking for “Holy Grail” type tone! OK, OK…I realize I’m starting to sound a bit crazy but at 68 years old and still rockin’ I think I’m allowed a little “crazy!” :)

Anyway, long story waaay short…I LOVE this Noble, it was worth the wait, it has already paid for itself, and when I land safely back on planet Earth, I plan to finish a couple new songs I’ve been working on. I hope you understand that while I say all of this with a littlest touch of “tongue in cheek,” everything I said about the Noble is how I feel! Such a simple design, such a huge palate of complex tones!

Sounds about right. And when you try to go "cold turkey" and unplug the Noble, it quickly becomes like I imagine it is for addicts who arrange their whole life to get that needle in the arm just one more time. And then you give up, plug the Noble back in and submerge into bliss. (Luckily without the bad side affects!)

Hi folks,

Help me out here.
I’m playing shows with my Fender Super Bassman300 tube head into a 4x10 cab. Noble goes to FOH blended with a mic in front of the cab.
I’m running the bass into the Noble and the noble jack into the Fender input.

Any tips on the Noble Volume knob…? I need help with the gain staging I guess. Is it better to have the Noble volume lower and then turn up on the Fender or the opposite? I’m playing a passive p-bass with flats. Noble EQ is flat.

Thanks!

The Volume only affects the 1/4" output.
I'd suggest testing how much volume out of the Noble matches the loudness of your amp if you were to plug in directly to it.
In my case, I set the volume at around 10:30-11 o'clock. That usually matches my basses' output.

You could also increase the volume if you are looking to drive the amp harder, though.

Hope this helps!

If I remember right, Jack told me unity gain on the Noble is around 11 o’clock so yeah, I believe Ivan’s advice is right on the money!

does the noble need power to pass thru sound? if its on my board and off would sound still pass through?

Somebody else can confirm but I seem to recall that without power it functions like a high quality passive DI similar to a Radial JDI for example. Lower output of course.

I don't know the official stance but my own personal experience is it does NOT pass sound to either the DI or the 1/4" out without it being turned on. I know this because I've had many a moment when testing my setup at a gig and I can't figure out why I have no sound whatsoever. You'd think the big white hot lighted Noble logo on top would be enough of an indicator...

Now, it could be that the output of the DI is so low that my levels in our IEM mixer didn't register but it seems I'd be able to hear at least something at that point.

With the power switch off mine passes no sound either

On my board nothing would power up since the Noble drives all of it.

That tube poking out of the side is just screaming "break me!".
Other than that, at $550 im not gonna be the guinea pig. The transformer sounds promising- how many tubes and what type are in the Reddi?

It's been 9 years since this post. I think it's interesting to see how times/thoughts change. I think a lot of bassists would jump at any Noble at $550.
