Noble Amps Preamp

My only wish list to make this a true preamp is a mid eq and a mid sweep then it would be undefeated as a preamp and DI.

I’ve been A/B’ing the Noble with the Bergantino Super Pre…

Any thoughts? I'm very happy with the flexibility of the Super Pre so far.

I’m also very interested as someone who has a Noble and a B Amp! The Super Pre looks really cool and I’m also currently experimenting with an HX Stomp.

I played a recording session this week where the tune being recorded was in a Steely Dan vibe. I was hired as a DB player, and the Noble came in handy yet again. Rather than rely on just the mic feed for the track, I asked for the Noble feed to overweigh the mic in the mix. The result was heavy and thick and solid… just what the track called for.

Really great. Very clear and pristine… very much just like the sound of the Noble when I listen back to a recorded track of it in the control booth. Clarity and definition throughout the entire range of the instrument.
Awesome! I put an order for a Noble a week ago and should be seeing it in ten months but wanted to know what could be possible regarding a Noble and Power Amp setup. Were you using a Berg head before you received the Noble? Or has this been your setup for a bit?

I’ve been using the Noble since January 2019. Prior to that, I was using Bergantino B|Amp, Aguilar SC500, and Aguilar db750. The db750 is still use for certain larger gigs.

When I got the Noble, I was running it through the effects return of the B|Amp, until about 2021, when I was using the effects return of the Mesa D800+. Regarding the B|Amp, I loved the features, but never really got on with the amp’s tone. There was no comparison between the B|Amp;s built-in -ramp and the tone of the Noble. My bass just sounded so much “alive” and richly detailed once I began using the Noble (and I say this as an unabashed Bergantino fanboy!).

The Jule M-500 presents a nice simple platform for the Noble to run through — although to be honest, I’m not sure there is any sonic difference between using the Jule versus using the effects return of another Class D amp like the Mesa D800+ or B|Amp. I’ll have to do a head to head comparison for more insight! ;)

IMHO, mids are the one thing that gets messed up by bassist most frequently.

When recording, you can adjust mids to taste to fit the song. Same with FOH.

What you hear on the stage is different than what the audience hears in a mix. By giving a solid bass tone, the engineer/sound person has the ability to adjust the tone best to the overall setting.

Thanks for the feedback! Currently, I have the Vanderkley Spartan which is a great uncolored amp but does not have an effects return on it. Looking forward to the Noble next year though. Currently, I am using the Khan which is pretty great but wanted to try out the Noble for a while now.

I miss my Vanderkley. It is literally the only amp that I regret selling.

On. side note, it would be a little redundant to use the Noble with the Vanderkley. I'm not sure you would gain anything.

It is a great amp! Yeah, I was thinking that maybe I would not need both which led me down the pre amp/power amp conversation.

Not all power amps respond the same. As I've said before, I tried to plug my Noble into my powered Wayne Jones speaker. All the dynamic stuff that I enjoy gets lost with that.

I'm learning that different powers engines react differently. Good luck in your quest.

Would you please expand on that?

To me, this is how fast they respond to the fundamental and how they respond, coupled with whether they have any A/D converters in them.

Some that have an A/D converter may take all the nuanced tube compression and just produce it in a digital mush that loses all the overtones and dynamics.

Likewise, some transformers (I'm supposing that's what it is) handle the incoming signal in different ways based upon their capacitance. But I'm not an engineer... it's just what my ears tell me.

Interesting !

I use a V4B. Any idea how it’s gonna react ?

I am by no means an expert, but I do have a practical question... what are your expectations?

The V4B is a tube amp. Are you looking for additional tube warmth? I'm not sure economy of scale works that way. What's the end goal?

The V4B is great by itself.
I am first of all acquiring a Noble so that I have a great DI when I don't use my amp which is pretty heavy and inconvenient to move around. Or when I want to record or play at night without my V4B on.

However, I ll sit at home with a Noble and a V4B. I am wondering how it will sound when plugged in the effect return to bypass the V4B preamp.
