Noble Amps Preamp

Noble recommends connecting direct to a power amp or using the effects return. That probably makes sense on an amp that adds a lot of coloration or signature sound when the EQ appears to be set flat (knobs at noon). For what it's worth, I tried both ways into my Markbass LMIII using and A/B footswitch. With EQ set flat and volume equalized I couldn't hear a difference. In view of that, I will probably always send the output from the Noble into the main input on my amp so that additional EQ options are available when needed and it frees up the FX loop to be used in the usual manner which is handy for any effects you don't want to send to the house.

Trying out the noble with a Demeter Minnie 800D class D power amp. This is a nice setup! The clean lot of headroom Demeter with the fat warmth of the Noble. Mini-rig of doom!

That looks and probably sounds great! Did you consider a big-a$$ Crown power amp or anything else as an alternate to the Demeter?

If I'm not mistaken, the effects return on the LM amps does not bypass the preamp. This would explain why you hear no difference between the normal input and the return input. Luckily the LM amps are pretty transparent when set flat, so it shouldn't color the tone of your Noble too much.

Hmmm. I'll have to check that. I was thinking that at least the tone controls were bypassed but you convinced me to check again. :)

Markbass amps have a reputation for being bright and mid-present, but I think that's more because a lot of other brands are mid-scooped when set "flat" (controls at noon). I agree they are actually closer to flat than a lot of other brands.

Well, Noble Preamp/DI #156 showed up earlier this week. I acquired it mainly as a solution for having more control and consistency on fly away gigs, as I have always missed my Jule Monique 700 on those occasions. Don't get me wrong, I still love Monique after over one year of trouble free operation and have no plans of letting her go. All the same LOVE there! That's a different thread though!

First off, I wanted to share my gratitude with all who have shared their experience as well of those who have raised pertinent questions regarding the particulars of this unit. You have played a considerable role in my decision to purchase the Noble and I appreciate everyone's input, especially now that I have had the experience of using one myself.

I was surprised and I it is believe worth mentioning the fact that it came with an impressive ten year warranty... Mr. Jack Roan stands behind his product!

IMO the Noble is definitely all it's chalked to be: well thought out and immaculately designed; built like a tank; amazingly thick tube tone equaled with presence and transient response. Sounded great right out of the box and using several different basses I easily dialed in a seemingly limitless number of useful tones especially when paired with an O.E. Cali76 CB.

Thanks again everyone for your input, and let's give three cheers for Jack!!!

I'm newish to my Noble and to using 2 band EQ. Anyone care to share their favorite settings? Obviously these will vary by venue, cabs, amps, etc but curious if folks tend to keep the tone controls flat vs 9 vs 12 vs 2 o'clock, etc.
All I can say is play around with it. Dan Lutz recommended that info to me. You'll get all kinds of cool tones.

I'm very green IME, too, but I have not felt the any need to put either one past 10 or 10:30. I am using in conjuction with the power section of my Monique 700 only, into two Baer ML-112 cabs. Boosting both together gives a nice bump in the mids I've noticed(and as others have previously noted. It works!) and added that p bass "bark" I dig. I just looked where mine is set and ended up with both at 9 o'clock yesterday. Bass at 10 o'clock or 10:30 and treble at 9 o'clock was warm and round, vice versa was more pointed. Less is many times more as they say. I find it sounding very musical in any case! Dialing in the Cali76 CB is what is eluding me... What seems to be your preference at this point?

I had a bass to build last weekend, so really have not used it much at all. Will get some time with it tomorrow.
