Noble Amps Preamp

I may be wrong, but I red somewhere that the eq controls on the Noble are boost only because designed as a Fender tone stack, albeit with custom features.
So, eq controls at 12 o' clock means bass and treble boost. If you are experimenting too much fatness and bass it could be worth twisting that knobs, at least to try the unboosted tone, fully counter clockwise. In the end, that's why mr. Noble put those knobs, they are intended to be turned if necessary

I run it either way. If you put it at 12, you get a mid-notch. I like that "flat" better than starting from totally off. Either way, the bass switch left flat is more than I'm usually wanting.

Anyone got experience on changing other tube? like telefoken/ jj/ rtc.
Does it has to be paired

I read some of the old post about tube..
Keen to try out now

I typically have to pick through my pile of GE/Sylvania/RCA to find one with reasonable microphonics for the first stage, thus the additional charge for NOS tubes. JJ on the other hand have been extremely consistent, and are nearly always great.

Don't hesitate to drop me an email for help changing the tubes if needed.

Jack. Thanks for the responce!
I will go try the JJ first :D

Damn. I really didn't need something else to GAS over. Any metal or hard rock guys using these?
I play aggressive music. Not exactly what one might call metal or hard rock. But very much in the vein of Jesus Lizard, Shellac and Fugazi. The Noble is outstanding in this context as well. I just went a few months without one and I was super bummed out. It takes overdrive and fuzz really well, but you have to experiment and see what works, as the rest of your rig is a big factor in this as well. I found the Fuzzrocious Demon, Fairfield Barbershop and Mr Black Bass od really jive with the Noble perfectly. But yeah, the Noble sounds excellent in that context.

Thanks man!

I'm in a Stoner/Metal band (link in my sig) and I just started a new noise rock inspired project. It started out very Jesus Lizard but ending up a little more Tomahawk. Can't complain though. Both groups have awesome bass tones.

I'm using a TS inspired pedal for my grit with the noise project and a combination of a tube overdrive and Sansamp with the other group. This might pair nicely with both set ups.

Do you run the noble direct to the power amp?

Serial number 149 arrived at my office yesterday! Can't wait to play with it on the weekend! The look and feel is amazing. It screams quality. :hyper:

Probably won't have time before then. :crying:

Generally I only bring a compressor a DI and an EQ pedal (along with my Markbass 1x12 combo) to my church gig and everything sits on top of the amp. I love that the Noble lets me leave the wall warts at home. With 9v and 12v ports its almost like getting a voodoo box for free. Makes it a little easier to swallow the price.

Anyone play/own a Noble and a Sadowsky outboard pre?

I know they are different animals but they both sport discrete gain stages and modified FMV tone stacks.

I used to own the Sad outboard pre/DI, but I do own a couple of the Sadowsky onboard preamps (into a Radial JDI). I've done some, but not exhaustive, comparisions between the onboard pre 'set' how I like it - and then in passive mode driving the Noble. Both are a very very nice sound - BUT the Noble is in a different league - much richer, cleaner. I'm seriously considering pulling the onboard preamps from one or more of my basses. Only considering... NOT rushing in, but so far I've not needed to use any onboard tone shaping to get the sound I want. I can see casual situations where I may not want to bring the Noble, and that the onboard will be useful. For now I'm going either passive>Noble - or flat>Noble.

How do you like the Meatbox? Do you end up using it very much at gigs? If so, do you send it to the house or only to your amp? I have been thinking about that pedal but wondered if I would use it at all for FOH. I tend to gravitate to the low end of the B and E strings and even go to drop-A sometimes, so I'd be a little worried about blowing up the house speakers and/or getting the sound man worked into a tizzy (though that could be great fun). :-)

Whenever I see a two band preamp, especially if it's boost-only, I wonder about the comparison to Sadowsky (which I don't own). I have sort of settled in to using 4 band preamps and tend to scoop the mids a little at more like 400-500 hz rather than the 700 hz that sits between the Noble bass and treble shelving controls.

I think the Sad boosts bass at 40 (or 50) hz and below vs the Noble is 80 hz. They are pretty close on the treble frequency I think at 3-4khz. All else being equal (which, of course, is never the case), I might rather see the bass boost lower than 80 and the mid scoop (when boosting both hi and lo) lower than 700, but the proof will be in the listening and testing...plus you can always put an equalizer in the chain. I love the Empress ParaEQ which is dead silent and runs on 9volts.

Then again, if you think about the REDDI and all of the $200 DI boxes, like the JDI and Countryman, most guys would be sending a flat-ish signal to the house anyhow. When starting from that perspective, any tone controls on the DI are a bonus and a tack-on to whatever else is in your chain or amp.
