Noise from the Fan?

Never noticed it until a few years back, but my old trusty Trace Elliot head has a crazy hum. At one point, the fan popped out of the housing during transit, and the hum stopped.
Are they known for bad shielding on the fans?
Also, anyone know if a newer fan will help cut down on the hum?

The hum can be mechanical or electrical. If it is mechanical, you might be able to clean it, maybe lubricate it (some fans are sealed), and tighten it down.

If you remove the fan there should be a label on it with a manufacturer's name and model number. You can look up the spec sheet and that will tell you if it is AC or DC, how many cubic feet per minute of air is moved, and all the other details. From their you can select a replacement from an electronics parts supplier such as Mouser, Newark, Digikey, or Allied Electric.
