Non Fender 5 String P Bass

I have 3 better stocked stores to choose from. The one that I found from the recommendations from you guys was the Yamaha BB1025X. Played it in the shop and the B was full with great depth and sustain. I got it used for 840 Cdn which isn't smokin' but cheaper that the 1500 for the P5 and slightly less than the 1000 retail for the Yammy. The same shop will let me upgrade to the 2025 (used) for another 800 if I want. Got flats on it and doing the set up today. Bonus having the J style pup (PJ pup config), liking the sounds I'm getting with that added to the mix.

Kind of a sad day today - returned a Fender Amc. Std. P5 that I hung on to for the full 30 days of a 30 day refund policy because I really wanted to get past the metallically hollow low volume B string on it, but couldn't. The good news for me is I'm in the market for something that has that great P Bass low bottom thump on all 5 strings. Any suggestions?

how was your action? Fender aint to be set low and its a passive tone instrument which need to be pushed with some "supplements" in order to be full and meaty sounding. as an owner of Jazz (Fender) 5 strings which I adore, I got to say that I had to put that action medium to high in order to feel right. as for tone, thing like Sadowsky outboard preamp is a miracle helper.

Yamaha are great instruments too! good choice. (I like Fender better,still...)

Excellent choice! Enjoy playing it, I sure do enjoy playing my Yamaha BB!

Yeah, I've got a J4 that I did my 1st set up for years on a month or so back. I was surprised and initially pleased with how much lower I was able to set the action. But the tone changed substantially with the E sounding kinda hollow and ringy now a lot like the P. I'll have to raise the action on that one after I come up for air with my new yummy Yammy. :bassist: Didn't think of raising the action on the P because I was thinking I needed the string closer to the pups and that raising it would increase the problem while decreasing the volume. Might've worked, though, as I have the same issue with my J's E now. Thanks everybody for your input/help. I'll say it again - what an awesome site this is! Well worth the 5 bucks a year I'm paying! :hiding: Kidding!

I was playing your used P5 at L&M NE location. i can see why you werent too fond of it. The b-strings do sound hollow :/ its the same with my Jazz V.

I almost bought a fretless Squire P. Damn temptations.

Y'know, what's scary, is that's not the one I had. When I brought back the one I had, they had me try the one that you played that they'd restocked, and it had the same issue. One of the reasons I decided to go non Fender. By the way, finally feels like spring today, nice, huh? - been a long winter! If you're in the market, check out L & M S.W., they have the entry level BB Yamaha for a lot less $. From what I've read on this forum, players love em'.

Minus the snafu of the white stuff that fell last night, sure it does and it will feel like spring.

I was at SW L&M this week, i love the new BTB singlecut bass they have. Its very churchy :P

but back to the P5 issues, the BB's do have a more solid B string, especially the 1000x series, from a/bing from the 400x bb's if did find the 1025x being brighter, punchier and more articulated especially in the lower registers.
