Noodling/Showing-off between songs

I think every guitar player(on the execption of one) I've ever played has tried to shred inbetween songs at shows.I can't stand it.

Another pet peve I have is the guitar player who always has to retune his guitar for 5 minutes after every song.
They'll first tune through their pedal,then they will tune to the fifth fret ,playing open strings,followed by harmonic tuning.This is then followed by a little bluesy lick,as if he is giving the audience a real treat.
This is then followed by a nod to the other guitar player,the drummer,or me,as if to say "i'm ready".

I've never had a gig with my current band... Cos the lead guitard is more concerned with shredding, sweep picking and playing Fade To Black on his acoustic than practising by himself/rehearsing/finding a decent drummer... And the rhythm/singer never turns up! He's always 'ill' on the one day we actually want to do something... :@

I'm walkin out on them anyway... They can kep my songs... I'll write better ones!

I only had this problem once. My band was playing rockcovers in a small bar. At the end of the night it was stuffed with people and there was a good vibe. After our last song, the crowd shouts for more, of course, and the guitarist starts doing the intro to Thunderstruck (which we didnt know):S People were pretty disappointed :(

Noodling at practice will sometimes be productive if it turns into a jam. And the "how the heck does this lick go, anyway" type noodling is a sad necessity sometimes.

But most of the time it's just annoying. Particularly when some of you are trying to have a conversation about the structure of a song, or something like that.

Noodling at gigs beyond the necessary "is this thing on" is just blech! :spit:

I don't noodle between songs.

I DO noodle when we are setting up, checking my amp and PA sound levels with songs different than I'm going to play. Not to show off, but to warm up my fingers (I usually try something hard) and so as not to preview the songs we are going to do.

I don't think that's really noodling. You gotta warm up. You gotta set your levels. Why not do it with some song you're not playing that night?

I credit it to one too many of those energy shot thingies. Like a kid with too much sugar. :hyper: :D

He doesn't usually noodle, at least not annoyingly so. Dunno why, but we were all in pretty high spirits the other night. There were outbreaks of silliniess all evening. :D

I never realized how unprofessional noodling (so THATS what its called) was untill I started playing for my current band. They always mute between songs and always seem to show up ON TIME ready to play. weird. I want to impress them with my own professionalism so I just do the same (ok I caught myself noodling once last week, and yes it was the intro to TOOL Schism).

It does make you look more proffessional and disiplined.

did anyone figure out if Les Claypool covered Master of Puppets?

Sure did! Not sure if he ever did the full thing or if there's a studio recording but there ya go:)

There shouldn't be enough time between songs to noodle.
Finish one song. Start another. Where's the set list anyways?
Noodling is for noodle heads.

Practice on your own. Rehearse with the band. No noodling.

I don't noodle when I'm with my band. Well, I'm in this other situation. This guy is
trying to get a show put together with all practices actually at the club. He takes
time between songs to figure out what to do next. So, yes, I noodle to buy him time
or else the jukebox comes on.

The band im in currently rehearses on weekends and we have a definite noodling problem. Mostly from everyone besides me. It's so obnoxious. We have a keyboardist, guitard, and a drummer. Its obnoxious to be trying to figure out a song while the keyboardist is blasting a ridiculous synth solo.The drummer and guitarist a equally bad.

back in the days, my favorite was when you were trying to get a tuning note off of the guitard or keys and the drummer just wouldn't shut the hell up ..... "bam! whack! bang! parafriggin' diddle!" ..... thank the music gods for electronic tuners without mic inputs and pointy, easily lobbed objects within reach :D

Ain't none, sug.

Our fearless leader/guitarist noodled at practice the other night. He NEVER noodles!!! He has an iron-clad "no noodling" rule!

The drummer and I were trying to get him to listen to a cover tune we want to do. He just noodled all the way through it. So, we get to where we're going to work on the tune, and he WANTS TO KNOW HOW IT GOES!!! "Baby, we just played it for you, and you didn't listen, because you were noodling. So...we'll play it again, and let's listen close."

And we did, and he did, and we did fine, and it'll be a great addition to the set for our NYE gig.

He was sufficiently abashed. He's a sweetheart, he really is. He just...wasn't listening. That happens to our guitar-playing friends from time to time, and we have to give them a little tough love, for their own good.

i admit it. i noodle. i usually hit the mute button, and I won't do it if we are doing something productive. but sometimes i just wanna groove with the drummer, and the band I'm currently in is not very groove oriented....
if you noodle with a groove, is it noodling? i've been working on a solo bass piece, and i think this drummer and i are going to record it sometime.

in any case, I try not to noodle at full volume ever, and especially not when we are being productive.
