Nordstrand Big Single Opinions

The big Splits do stop hum, but the result is a drop off in the high mid and top end of the sound. Also, Paul had a Big Split in the front of the Nordy originally, but found that there was a strange drop off in volume on the A string when you realy dug in on the bass. Carey reckoned it's something to do with the strings oscillating on a wider trajectory when playing hard, and with the split coils not overlapping as they would on a P-bass layout, the vibrations aren't fully captured by the magnetic field created. At least, that was what Paul experienced on his bass - it may well be different for others as everyone plays slightly differently??

That's why the Big Splits in the Nordy were changed to the Big Singles on this Nordy VJ5.

As I said before - the bass sounds really fabulous now. I have been blown away by just how great the Big Singles sound - amazingly good sounding units, loads fo definition, range and projection.

Kevin - that is interesting, on Pauls Nordy it has more traditional Jazz spacing I believe, on my Roscoe the neck pup is farther back towards the bridge, giving a more mid heavy sound, and I tend to play quite percussively near the bridge. My fear is that I will not have enough low mid oomph in the sound with the singles.

Man, I thought I had this Big Single/Split thing clear in my head - I am not so sure now:confused:

Stew at Nordstrand seemed to favour the singles too - his last email was - "the Big Splits, particularly in an ash/maple bass, will give you all the goodies that the Big Singles deliver but they are a hum canceling design. They're aggressive in the best way. We like to call them the "Jaco Schwartzenegger" sound!"

I hope Stew does not mind me quoting him here.:ninja: ;)

On the Sei I have the Fat Stack swired permanently in stacked mode. Thanks for the complement regarding my bass - I have a new fretless one with macassar ebony currently under construction - here's a few pics of that:

Stew:o - thanks for all your input. I think with such a new product it is difficult to get a clear answer to matters of tone etc so some guesstimating has to be done;)

I am more than happy with my decision now, thanks again. Can't wait to get them in the bass (which I haven't even got yet).:D

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with questions about Big Singles and Splits, I also got an email from Stew that helped direct me in the right direction, thanks Stew. I getting a new bass made by Nino Valenti and I'm having Big Singles installed. Nino originally suggested them stating that he LOVED thier sound, but I wasn't sure because I'd never heard them. This is great feedback, and I'll know for sure in about 5 months. :hyper:

Question about the big singles. Aren't those meant to be 'replacement pickups' for those with soapbars that want a more traditional J sound? Why would you install those versus the more traditional looking Nordy J's?

I'm probably wrong, but I remember reading this somewhere.
