Nordstrand big singles... experiences?

Any experiences with Big Singles or Big Splits & Glockenklang preamp? I have both pickups models and 2 Glock preamps (2 and 3 band) for 2 bass projects that will start soon (a 4 string and a 5 string)

Specs will be:

Maple Fretboard
Wenge/Mahogany Neck (Bolt on)
Primavera Body/Flamed walnut top

I was doubting about the OBP3, but I think I don't need the "Aguilar colour", woods will do it. That's why I've decided for Glock, but It will be fine to read some inputs.

Not me personally however a fellow bassist I know (not a TB-er is using 5 string big singles with the Glock and likes it. Very big tone with lower mid single coil tone still intact (although not a much as Jazz but still there with a fuller sound). I'm with you on Aguilar (I'm no fan of them anyways).

Your builds sound yummy...Post them up when they are done.

I got my shielding done and installed my new Big Singles and passive VVT harness. Somehow after installing everything(probably to late into the evening), I had some wierd output problems. I dropped it off at my local guitar tech guru and had him trouble shoot my installation and do a set up on the bass also.

It ended up that some of my shielding was shorting something out somewhere.

Anyway, I got it back yesterday and was able to use it for band rehearsal. I need time to fine tune my sound yet, but my initial impression is very good. Compared to the Bartolini pick-ups and active pre, it has a much more open sound with a bit of growl(just what I was looking for).

I just had my fourth Warmoth completed with Big Singles. I love Jazz basses and have several multi-flavored versions. I wanted something different again. Because I couldn't really find them anywhere to try I relied on user reviews, most of which were in this thread.

I must say I am not disappointed in the least!! The bass was completed this past Saturday afternoon (strung with DR flats), noodled for an hour and it was off to a gig. I have them running with no preamp and a split stacker set up: V-T on each. I used my Aggy 212 and late 80's GK800RB - They really sounded amazing! My bandmates are in love with this bass, and so am I!!! Huge room filling bottom with great mid presence, every note defined like a punch in your chest! The amp was flat except for low mids bumped to 2 o'clock and the bass did the rest.

I left room for a pre just in case - I am already sure I will never use one. :D

I plan to swap the Stock Pu´s from my Lakland 55-01 against some Nordstrand Pu´s, because I feel the MK-1 from Bartolini are the small weak Point about this Bass, that I like alot as my Backup Bass. (Rosewood Fretboard)

I'm a little bit insecure wich Nordstand PU's are right for me. Big Singles or Fat Stacks...

Otherwise, to compare, or to give you an Idea what sounds good to me I like the Sound from my Sadowsky Modern Series R5-24 alot.

I have to order them via WWW, because no one has them in Stock here and so I'd like to get as sure as possible..

OK, I took a couple weekends of shows to get a better idea of how I'm liking this new bass...

...and I DO like it!

The first show I used it at, it took me a while to balance out the volumes between the Lakland with Big Singles and my G&L L2500 - I've really been spoiled on the G&L MFD's. I also at first thought I had an issue with the bass cutting out, but it came down to a loose wire on my wireless pack (D'OH!)

One thing I did change was the pickup height on the Lakland - not much, but I did raise them both a few turns and the signal is much better balanced between the 2 when I switch basses. The next show I was lovin' it, sound and feel.

And then a 'funny' thing happened - Friday night during the 1st set, my singer brought over a cup of a shot that was sent up to the band, and trying to 'feed' me whilst playing, poured 1/2 of it down my front, my arm, and on the bass. I wiped it off quickly and finished the set. The next day when I used the bass, my B string was almost completely dead - no sustain! Good shot, I guess.... LOL!


The job my tech did was amazing - I have no noise coming from these single coils, even panned either way. I'm sure I could 'force' some by standing right up against the mixing board or a computer monitor, but for usual usage these are awesome.

Everything I said before was true and honest... but then I had 2 rehearsals (with other bands) in 2 different places where the bass was almost unusable - noise/buzz - had to stand at a certain angle just to make it passable. And then the clincher - had a show with my Zep tribute at a real nice theatre-converted-to-rock-club..... same problem - in sound check, the tech could not get rid of the noise - I had to switch to my other bass (my gold flake G&L that is mainly for my disco-dance band) - I loved the Big Singles sound and I loved the bass they were in, but if I couldn't use it for a show with the band I bought it for, then something had to change.

I realize this is just a physics issue, and I probably went too extreme by selling the bass - I really did love it - in fact, just bought another Lakland 55-01 (stock) and will 'upgrade' again - not sure to WHAT this time. Maybe try the Big Splits or Big Stacks, or possible try some Status Pickups..... I should've just kept the bass and worked on it, but I thought I found something else I wanted, and that didn't work out either, so I'm now back full-circle....

I am not blaming the Nordstrands - I think if I had ANY SC PU's in those same locations I would've had the same problems. As far as single coil PU's, they were the best I ever played, sound-wise.

Had the Big Singles in the bass for a couple of months now and i must say they are full of growl and can cut thru mixes and any band very well. I'm so comfortable with them I don't find an urge to swap the Big Splits in for comparison.

They will go in someday but you get the geeze of what i'm trying to say.
