Norstrand Big Splits or Fat Stacks?

for prices contact a dealer, I don't know how much it goes for, sorry.

The FS with flats should give you a thuddy sound, but I don't have enough experience with this combination.... maybe someone else can be more precise.

not much help, I know.

Are the FS going to sound mushy or too dark with flatwounds? My string of choice are Sadowsky flats. If you're not familiar with them they're an even sounding string with good amounts of detail, but they're still flats.

I played a jazz gig last night with FS, Audere, and TI Jazz Flats...I made a low-tech recording with my portable recorder. If anything sounds decent, I'll let you know. It wasn't too dark at all, and definitely clear - but I was playing through my Phil Jones Bass rig which is punchy as all get out.

Plus if I wanted a little more bite, I could just turn up the treble (didn't do it once) or the Z-mode (switched to High/Mid for one or two tunes). FWIW, I kept the pickups in humbucker mode the whole time - it's a great sound in the mix. When practicing on my own, I'm often in SC mode though.

Hey joker,
glad you like them. I had them in my Sadowsky, too.
The Nordstrand pre is a refined aguilar pre (3 bands) and, IMO, it's even better than the Sadowsky (more flexible and usable)...

I've seen the website.
I see volume, blend, treb, mids, bass.
I don't see passive tone control, in that pic, or listed in specs.

Sure, one could add one upstream of blend and all the other downstream items.
I just didn't know if it came configured that way or not.

Can the Big Singles be ran without a preamp? I read on the Nordstrand site that the FS will benefit since they have a drop in output, but not sure about the BS. I'm looking at a passive jazz with the dual vol/tone setup.

Iv'e run Big Splits passive. They have a pretty hefty output.

I have Valenti #79.
4-string jazz bass, with "Big Singles".
Sadowsky pre-amp.
With VTC, ( passive option)

These pickup sound huge, with pre-amp.
Jazz bass on steroids, tone.
In passive mode, the sound like a jazz should. ( a bit brighter)
Both options sound great live.
