Sure it can...but I am the front man and sing most of the songs. Very hard to leave the mic in the middle of a dance set.

I use both, but I only own 3 active basses out of my 13, so I think by default I prefer passive basses

Passive, because no freaking batteries. Either way I'm going to go through all the electronics I want so why complicate things with a battery?

I prefer passive because there are no battery worries. If I want the sound of an active bass, I can just purchase an outboard preamp and if, it fails, I still have a functional bass.

My active 5 string Sire only costs $499. Plus it's passive too.

Actives with no EQ, i.e. EMG pickups. If I can't have that then passive, absolutely.

I have four $2000+ basses and they are all passive

I like my passive Yamaha because with flatwounds I can cop a P-bass tone nigh-indistinguishable from the real thing.
I do prefer active though, because my pedals, especially modulation, love being fed mids. In particular flanger and modulated delay/reverb thrive on a mid-heavy signal.

Used to be strictly active bass player. Then spent 10 years away from electric basses while I submersed myself in playing upright bass. Coming back to electric basses I found I preferred the sound and the 'feel' of passive basses. 'Feel' = I can control dynamics and tone with my plucking fingers way better on a passive bass. (Like you do with an upright.)

Theoretically an active bass should go fine directly into a power amp, correct? Instead of tone control on the amp you get tone control on the bass itself.
