Not another "best bass" thread: What do YOU use for metal?

Some of the car forums I'm a member of will not allow "best" questions........and for good reasons.

I completely understand your not asking what's best but of course many will take it that way even though you've explained yourself quite well.

I really think the owners & administrators of Talkbass should consider this same rule of not asking "what's best" especially in the world of musical instruments where there are thousands of variables that can't all, ever be possibly nailed down.

Many seasoned bass players in here with years of experience all basically answer these questions the same way.....

Physically go to a store, put a bass in your hands, play it (plugged or unplugged) and you'll get all your answers.

If your interested in a bass that your local stores don't have, then by all means ask other players to give you their feedback & opinion on that bass.

You'll still have the problem of "that bass" not being in your arms - which in my humble opinion is the one & only true way any musician will know if its the right bass for him/her.

I don't think you understood the question, he was asking the metal players on the forum what they use, not what the bast bass is.

Geezer Butler, Steve Harris, Ian Hill, Duff McKagan, Roger Waters, etc etc etc. I think your in good company with a P-bass.

Geezer and Harris are big reasons why I tried the P-Bass in the first place, and I've never really gone back :) I have other basses and I will bring them out for the heavy jams from time to time but the Precision just "does it" for me.

This is really one of the best options IMO. I am saying that from a recording perspective and talking with successful metal producers. The Spector has a huge tone and makes the guitars sound massive as well. It is currently a favorite in metal studios.

A more focused tone that punches and more about low mids that is awesome is the Warwick Dolphin.

You're supposed to come in here and say the Ibanez SR5006!

I've been liking my modded (Bartolini gear) Spector NS2000 Q6 with GHS Pressure Wound's, strung E-F with a variety of tunings, usually going drop D-D. In the past, it's been a mixed bag of other Spector's, Ibanez's, Danelectro 58 Longhorn reissue, Schecter's, and among others.

I do also use my Squier Jazz Standard for some applications, but I'm restringing it with flats soon (when I get them in the mail), and I'll see how that works out for classic rock stuff.

I agree with gearhead17. It's all about the tone you want to achieve. Some basses work well for some things, while others work better for other things. Also, I won't hesitate to jump from a 4-string to a 6, and vice-versa with 5's thrown into the mix. I usually don't use a B, but sometimes it's useful. I do need to look into a 7-string...top runners for that are the Conklin GTBD7 and the Ibanez BTB7E. I'd love to have both, but money really won't allow for that right now.

*EDIT*

I should also add that I wouldn't hesitate to throw a fretless into the mix.

Depends on the intended application of said metal. For example, for anti-mind-snooping foil skullcaps, only lead will do; neither tin nor aluminum will stop them Y rays!

I haven't played in a metal band in quite some time, but I DID have a couple of proper metal bands way back when and I played a Steinberger 5-string. Hardly anyone had even heard of 5-strings, let alone use them and the fact that it was a Steinberger got even more head scratches. But, it was really heavy sounding AND clear and crisp and both bands had a bombastic enough show for most people to not care...a lot of them even got turned onto 5-string by hearing it's massive low end! IF I did play metal these days, I'd use the same I do anyway...a Fender MP Telecaster Bass. MASSIVE and a great player...I haven't missed the 5 since I gave it up years ago...and + a million on a big SS amp and loads of cabs...gotta move that air!
