Spent today's lunch break filing teeth into these feeler gauges to avoid having to spend £80 or more on a set of nut files. They work surprisingly well.

I did that. I still have the feeler gauges around here somewhere. As long as the nut material isn’t too hard they do indeed work acceptably if a bit slowly. I did finally manage to get most of set of nut files off of Reverb a few years ago.
What I've learned in my very short time making basses is that even professional/mass market basses do not have everything lined up perfectly. They have flaws. And they have super expensive CNC machines and skilled workers. Before I made my bass, I studied my MusicMan, Fender and Peavey for these "flaws". They all have them to some degree. Tuners not equally spaced, small wavy spots left on the body woods before prime and paint (you need a light to see them), and on and on. This helped ground me and let me know my bass is fine with its flaws. I now know where to focus most of my attention (fretwork, neck alignment, etc.). But...I still try to make my bass look like it came off a perfectly made CNC machine.
Are you sure both pickups are working? The tabs that point opposite directions are separate poles and don’t connect to the same common. It looks like the grey wire on the left is not connected to the other side. Try the same wiring but using the poles in the same side of the switch.
Yes they both work with the switch either left or right, although it's back to front, just not together. This is the diagram I used, the switch is right according to this.
Are you saying those two tabs should be soldered together?
No, I was mistaken. Sorry. I don’t have a Tele switch in front of me to look at. I found a few pictures online of ones already partially wired up. Maybe they’ll help. Note which terminal is the one that always makes contact with the curved wiper in the middle of the switch and make sure that’s the one your pickups are connected to.
I'm declaring this finished, although I'm still fiddling around with the setup a bit all the electrics are now working as they should. Only got a photo without the knobs earlier but I can post a few more later if there's still anyone listening.
