I know Mr. Hall has a vision for the rickenbacker company being a small, dedicated manufacturer, but I don't understand why they don't just expand manufacturing to a second plant. Then they wouldn't be eyeball-deep in backorders, and they would be able to fulfill more of the customers wants. The 4003 noir was cool and other "special runs" are cool, but the thing that I think would make rickenbacker a really incredible company is a custom shop, with an option for a hollow-body bass and 5-string models. RIC makes so much money now, I can't imagine that the cost of starting something up like that would be threatening, especially when you consider how much money they'll make out of it.

Excellent used 4001's that still have all the metal pieces, electronics, frets, original finish and strings and all in great shape can be found regularly for around $2,000.

Honestly, though, I'm really bothered by the lack of a neck pickup rout. I've never seen or heard of a single-pickup 4005 before.

That's pretty sad, a total hack job. Just buying period correct parts would choke you, many of them nearly unobtanium. Makes me a little weepy.
This guy/web-site is well known in Europe for attempting to sell this sort of cr@p at top prices... some of his inventory has been there since Ebay started. Most of it is crud.

Its a real one but its been routed out ,god knows how your gonna find hardware ,the routing could be patched and then the bass refinned in a solid color but getting all the hardware ? good luck especially the r tail piece ,ask Rick?...good luck i had a a 66 4005 with a cracked neck they wouldnt even look at it their incredulous response on the phone was "Your only one customer were to busy and "don't know if theres anyone here who could even repair it here" ,THAT WAS THERE ACTUAL RESPONSE IN 1988 ...Never bought nor will buy another Rick again
