Novice Player: Why do my higher strings sound so "thin"?

Is there a possibility that it could be your strings? Some strings have lighter D & G strings - I have seen 30 gauge G string which is extra light. 45 G gauge string seems to be norm/most popular.

I'd like to think that Sire would sell their bass to their customers with thin strings which is great for slapping and popping and Marcus Miller is all about that style of playing.
