Listening to older recordings such as this (Temptations, "Ultimate Collection"), it's easy to be struck by the low fidelity. One can also pick up on "warts": slightly flubbed notes by the vocalists or instrumentalists. But I wouldn't have it any other way. The lo-fi thing is part of the Motown Sound, and the imperfections are exceptions to the rule - the rule being that the performances are amazing. And overall, it goes to show how REAL the performances were. Modern recordings are usually highly processed and scrubbed squeaky-clean of imperfections... it's hard to tell humans are performing.
Frank Zappa's Cheap Thrills, a collection of sorts, about the half of the songs are live performances.
Currently listening to 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama'. Lately, I've been getting into Zappa. No wonder they call him 'genious', bits like 'We're Not Alone' are killer compositions.
