Double Bass Now what?

Hello all,
Just thought I'd update post concert and say it wen really well :)
Definitely the best bass day I've had so far. My bass held it together for the solo and I got to play a 200 year old Dutch 5 string and a Panormo between the dress and the show. Greatest freaking experience in world hahahaha, the life of a bassist. My best friend even got to play the 5 string in the concert! Its quite reassuring when you meet people in a profession that sometimes gets the stereotype of being filled with a-holes that are really the nicest people in the world and do everything they can to help out and encourage fellow, albeit younger, musicians.

But now I go about getting my bass fixed.
Thanks everybody for all your help and support! Talkbass is a lifesaver

glad to hear everything went well! as for your repair, you really need to check with kolstein to see if this is covered under their warranty. i would think they should cover at least part of the repair, given the fact that this is a new instrument and it sounds like the damage may be due to the saddle being improperly fitted to the instrument. they also may loan you a bass to use in the meantime, it's worth asking anyways. good luck!

I don't know what bass player crowd you hang out with but I generally have pleasant interactions with just about anyone who plays bass. Same goes for bass luthiers. Hopefully you'll find a better crowd soon..:cool:

Well it's in the shop. Thankfully insurance is covering the repair in full but still I already miss it after a day and won't know how long i'll be without it till tuesday or wednesday. But anyways heres a video of the beginning of the solo (camera ran out of battery :/....) other than a few questionable notes, taking 3 bows on that D where I should have only taken 2 but my bow was reversed so I had to improv and not holding that high A long enough it was good :) Too bad theres no cadenza and ending, I thought that was the best part, but I'll try and score another taping of it.

Well its been in the shop for a week now and the diagnosis is not good. Not good at all. The crack runs right underneath the bass bar, so the bass bar has to be taken out, the crack fixed and patched and then a new bar has to be fitted. Also some of the bracing has been compromised. This all comes to an estimated 4-8 weeks repair time. This ****ing sucks.

Sorry to hear that. What are you using in the meantime? I'm kinda in the same boat. The bass I'm planning on buying has been getting worked on for a month now and I just sold my bass before that, so I've been renting and anxiously waiting....

I've been using my old Engelhardt for the past week. Its in desperate need for a setup but it has 4 strings so whatever. Hopefully I'll be able to work out some kind of rental or borrow from somewhere in the meantime. What'd you sell and what are you upgrading to??

I sold my old German factory bass (1940-50ish?). It wasn't anything nice, but it was something decent to learn on. Out of the basses I've tried out so far, what looks to be my best option is a 100 year old Morelli. The work will be done (hopefully) by the end of the month. Can't wait.
