NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

Question for @Dsmnoisemaker :

Can one feed a clean +4dBu signal into the OCS and also have a clean +4dBu signal come from the output jack?

If so then I would assume that the GAIN knob on the OCS would need to be set very low as to manage the incoming +4dBu.

I ask the above question as I would likely place the OCS in front of my power amp input that typically receives +4dBu.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Yes you can feed 4dBu into it, it is within it´s headroom capability..just roll down the gain a bit and don´t go crazy with the resonance (which can really boost the low end)

Does this mean that Version 2.0 is already in the works? :D
Yes..
I´m practically out of OCS, just a couple left (yes, two left)..Thanks to you guys!!!!

So while i was preparing the new batch i decided to make a few corrections and upgrades for it..like a headphone output, aux input, a better DI out circuit, better noise figures, and improved the top end control range a bit (i felt that below 40% it was too dark and unusable). Also better looks and paint. so i called it the OCS Deluxe..
Now i´m in the process of quotations, so the new price will be announced after that..

i´m very excited about it!! and hope that it will let me put some bread on the table this time, because all of the original OCS income went right into this next batch production..

cheers!!!

Typical that I just got mine this week! Welcome upgrades though - that would make this the perfect headphone practice amp. One thing though - it would be good to be able to use it as a headphone amp / aux in but with the effect switched off, just in case you wanted to audition the sound without the cab sim.

Well you can bypass the cabsim..
It's a very powerful mono headphone amp, mostly for monitoring purpose..

Interesting. If you're referring to the High Response control, I really like the dark end of the dial when playing my P-bass with flats... different response than a passive tone control.

I'm intrigued by the Deluxe, but very happy with the current version, even though I haven't gigged it yet. Love love love the control it gives me over the low end especially (and elsewhere).

I'm glad I waited! Sounds great. :)

Would the headphone output have a separate volume control perchance? For possible monitoring purposes I was thinking.

yes, it includes a master volume control for the headphone amp. for the aux input you´ll need to adjust the source level to avoid clipping..with compressed audio it can be LOUD!!!

Well it is not that i elimninated the "dark" setting, i just adjusted the ranges so it can go a little further up (8khz vs 7 khz)) and a bit less dark (1.5kHz vs 1kHz). i found that under 2kHz it sounds too muffled and 40% of the knob turn was no really useful, and actually no speaker has that low LPF knee, even a 15" has a 1khz knee..

Cool, thanks for the clarification.

Dumb question; when utilizing the DI XLR to the board last night, and the output to my amp, the signal to the board would disappear after a bid. Happened a couple of times. I switched to the thru out instead and didn't have any further issues.

Am I a knucklehead for using the output in conjunction with the XLR out?

Not at all, that´s one of the things i improved on the next version. The DI output is shared with the normal output. when interfacing with mid or high input impedance devices it´s no problem, but if there´s a significant mismatch of impedances, strange things may happen, but "dissapearing after a while" is not one of those things..i don´t know the exact setup you were using, but sounds to me that there was some DC voltage going on there..phantom power maybe?

the next version has independent outputs, and the DI has a NE5532 opamp driving it, which drives 600 ohms easily..

Thanks for the reply Daniel. I run thru a tuner, chorus, Barbershop, VMTD then to the OCS. DI to the board, output to my poweramp. Pretty typical.

I will check the board's phantom power, but I can almost bet money it is off. I'm "running our sound" now, and the phantom power setting was one of the first things I check. I learned that from owning a Demeter pre. Phantom power can have ill effects with those pre's.

Worst case, the downside utilizing the through output is that I'm not hearing my FOH sound thru my amp. I can rely on setting my FOH mix (OCS setting) via the monitors.

The phantom power is just a theory..also try using the HI-Z setting of the board input..

If you would like to also go the opposite way and make an OCS Lite without headphone amp and DI (but with the other improvements) and on a smaller box I would be a customer for it.
I already have a great Radial DI and a Preamp with DI out so I would use the OSC on the preamp FX-Loop.

Agreed. I already grabbed the initial OCS but this describes my needs pretty well!
