NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

Well, my first complaint about the DSM OCSD. I tried routing my pedal board into the main instrument-in on my Demeter VTBP M 800D and placing the Omnicab in the effects loop. Sadly, the signal from the FX send was too hot for the pedal, and it started distorting. Has anyone had a similar issue?

I ended up just running the pedal board into the Omnicab and then the power amp (FX return) of the amp, and it worked cleanly. The volume was a tad low, but just slightly less than I usually get with the amp volume in the same position. This could've been my signal chain of pedals, though I didn't see anything set lower than usual.

Regardless, I really like this pedal as a tone shaper. I've considered just getting a Baby Sumo sized power amp and running the Omnicab as my pre.

Monster, was your signal chain; OCS at the end of your pedals signal chain > OCS 1/4 out to your amp's FX return? IIRC, you have some great preamp pedals and you may not need the added color from your amp, especially with an OCS. When you gig, or record, take the XLR from the OCS to the FOH. I'm sure you are way ahead of me on this.

I tried this with my old Markbass amp (SD800) and had crap for output. Tons of power operating "normally". It may be the way some class D amps are designed.? Total loss of power while only utilizing the FX return.

FWIW, I went to a Crest Pro 2.0 and I'm not looking back. However, I would consider the Darkglass (? Model) 900 watt amp and 86 my VMTD. $1k for an amp tho....ouch, and I don't think I would gain a whole lot. In fact, I dont run my poweramp bridged (single channel), so I kinda lose having a spare amp.

If the signal is too hot, you should turn down the gain on the ocsd. Or turn down the preamp level and turn up the gain.. i designed it to keep up clean up to 2V peak to peak signal. If the signal is too hot, the first thing to clip will be the resonance control, which at max is a 12dB boost of the cab size frequency..you can also use a 12v power supply for more headroom..

I had the OCSD gain all the way down. The Demeter head has no gain control, only a master volume.

I'll try it again and keep an eye on the resonance. I also have a 12v power supply, so I can try that. Thanks!

I'm considering my signal chain. I do have a Noble and an AO pre. I've considered ditching them, though now I'm thinking about a Baby Sumo power amp in place of the Demeter. I love that amp, but the Noble pre is as good, and I could shrink the form factor by going this route.

I'm unlikely to gig much. I usually just jam with friends, these days. I also do a bit of recording. Still, I really like that Demeter head. Though, I see your point.

Redid that "Goliath" recording, while switching the OCS on and off (off during every 3rd part of each section : 0:08 -> 0:11, 0:21 -> 0:24 and so forth).
Incredible what a difference it makes :) Much more focused and abrasive, but at the same time less harsh and brittle.
I started playing earlier than I should have, so that I could make sure it still sounded great with just me playing + drums + guitar (the bass starts at 0:14 on the original track).
For reference I've also added the soloed bass track.

Settings (@hbabels you asked for them !) :
High response : 7/10
Cab size : 8/10
Resonance : 8/10
Punch : 3/10
Mid response : 5/10

For those interested, b7K settings :
Blend : 11:00
Level : 11:00
Gain : 1:30
Bass : 1:00
Low mid : 2:30
High mid : 10:30
Treble : 12:00

Great choice! You may have read, but I run a pre/power rig into a fEARful cab. Outstanding! You won't be disappointed.

Took the amp apart and tweaked the gain control. No such luck. At the lowest settings that still produced useable bass volume, the send signal was too hot for the pedal, even with the pedal volume and resonance at their minimum settings. Still need to try the 12v option suggested.

I still have ways to use the pedal, so it isn't a loss. Just can't run it through the FX loop on this head.

You need the equivalent of one of those effects loop volume control boxes that folk sell as power "attenuators" for tube amps. One of those in front of the OCSD would work. You could take a parallel signal off the loop out and feed it to the loop in to keep signal volume the same for the amp.

I had to turn down the gain on my Demeter big time with my 18 volt Roscoes. That is really my only gripe with that amp... I would much rather have a active/passive switch or seperate jacks on that thing, rather than having to take it apart to adjust. Demeter does offer adding a switch for 75 bucks, but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

The maid has come and gone and just need my ocsd to make it home and on to my board. Nice lil spot just waiting. I really hope it shows this week as I have no kids and no on call this weekend and really wanna plug in to it...Any one else still waiting on their ocsd?
