Finally scooped an Edison preamp. Wanted a nice tube boost on the chain.
Been messing around with where it should go in the signal chain.
I wanted to put it at the start but i feel i loose a lot of dynamics on the Tech2112 with anything before it and i use it for grit so the edison was making it fullform grit.
Never seen the purple one but 'hey' no complaining.
 
I noticed the Version you have doesn't have the boost switch. Do you still get enough gain gain to get it to crunch or is it still more of a warm tube boost?
Oh yeah, you get some crunch by cranking the volume past 75%. I set it right about that threshold so I get the warm tube boost and then a little natural grit when I dig in. With the volume on full it has a rich distortion and no loss of low end. Per Seth's [owner/ builder] suggestion I sourced a NOS Tesla tube. Not sure I can hear a tonal difference as much as a headroom increase w/ the Tesla.

And you? How often do you use the boost switch? Does the switch add to the versatility? Or do you usually just set it and forget it?
 
My every note pedal, for bass or guitar. I have several versions, between Edisons and Oscars. I use one with no boost switch for my out-loud rigs, and a prototype with the boost switch for my direct recording and headphone rig (where both feed into the same SansAmp Para Driver). In both rigs, I set the pedal’s only knob to about unity gain, after wah and dirt but before everything else; boost switch on for direct/headphone guitar, off for bass. The boost doesn’t do it for me on bass, but I suspect that’s because I already have a lot of clank and grit dialed in elsewhere. Maybe I should set everything else flat and just leave the switch on all the time :D

I think you’ve made an excellent choice, and hope you feel as happy with yours as I do with mine :thumbsup:

Nice! I snagged the last one of the “white” ones. The amount of gain on these is incredible. For me it was love at 1st listen. I’m running it in one of the effects loops of my GT1000-Core using a Rick 4003. It sounds mind-blowingly great.

The “white” version was a little request from yours truly (I’ve got a thing for monochrome on pedal boards), which Seth very kindly agreed to.

I have several Edisons on a few different boards and love what they do for my tone when placed downstream from my drive pedals….especially the manner in which they push the mids with added tube character. The effect is quite different to tube pedals based on the Matsumin valvecaster, at least to my ear.

How do these work? My understanding is that preamp tubes require much higher voltage than a pedal would get in order to actually function like a tube. The light that shows the tube glowing is often an led bulb shining on the tube. I’m not saying that is how this pedal glows - just that I’ve seen other pedal makers use this technique.

I have a Vox Valvetronics pedalboard with a “preamp tube” - though the tube is not in the signal chain the way an amp’s preamp tube is. I’d have to look it up, but the tube is used to adjust how the pedal processes tones. I believe it uses an led to make the tube glow brighter.

The pedals that use a preamp tube in the signal chain typically have an AC power cable plugged in to the wall.

Curious as to how these pedals work!

Low voltage, high current power can be transformed to high voltage, low current power. I'm not familiar with this particular pedal, but for Sushi Box pedals they run internally at up to 350V. You still aren't going to get the same type of glow with these preamp tubes that you see with big power amp tubes, but that doesn't mean they aren't working properly. My Effectrode LA-1A doesn't have LEDs for the tubes, and all you get is a tiny bit of glow across the filament. Not very exciting :D

This pedals works with a switch-mode power-supply. It is a DC-DC converter to get about 200 volt from 9 Volt. The Heating of the preamp tube works with about 6volt

Right now it's at the front of the chain. I can turn it up all the way and it doesn't breakup at all just gets "louder".
Never use the boost because it puts the signal on steroids. When I do turn it up I like how my bass cuts and has some like warm chime to it. I like the pedal but I thought the tube would provide a bit of grit.

My chain right now is:
Edison -> EBS Comp -> Tech2112 Driver -> OC2 -> POG

Maybe putting it at the end or after the compression?
The compression is on very low and I don't boost from that pedal I keep it at unity.
Will have to mess around with the setting and placement.

Kinda surprised you don't get any breakup when fully cranked.

Currently I just use the Edison [and pedal tuner], but when I use it w/ an Ampeg OctoComp I put the Edison before the compression as well.

The Edison pedal itself doesn’t get particularly gritty without the boost switch engaged, though I seem to get a bit clobbering it with a hot signal. I’ve run it dimed in the effects loop of my Mesa Buster! 200 for some gnarly power tube distortion at not-absolutely-bonkers volume (and may have earned myself a $400 re-tubing in the process :banghead:); I don’t know how it would do with other types of power sections.
 
Finally got a good idea of how to l to mix it in and play with it. I use it as a straight signal boost. At full blast the signal starts to break up some so i have it at like 50-60% on.
Generally my bass sound better and I'm learning to tweak my comp and drive that come after

Ever tried arranging the pedals pog>oct>sans>compressor>edison??
