NPD Southampton Boosted Fuzz

I received my new Southampton Boosted Fuzz this week.

It has a sparkling purple finish and a 1590b enclosure with top jacks (super small form factor, like the new Fifth Gear v2). It has Boost/Bias/Fuzz/Volume controls, all nicely laid out.

So, what does it do? It's really a very nice gated synthy fuzz that can do the whole thin synthy velcro thing. But, there is a major twist. The boost control provides boost and can bring back your low end, making it extremely bass friendly. You don't lose the gated synthy nature of it when using the boost.

The Bias and fuzz control lets you also change the nature of the fuzz and tame it if you want. The boost then can bring back volume and body to the sound to make it a usable lower gain pedal instead of the usual thin sputtery thing you'd expect from that kind of pedal.

Overall, I'd say this is yet another winner from Southampton. Top notch build quality, great aesthetics, great price, made in Canada (ok, I'm biased on that last one).

I'm going to try and answer as a player not the builder: the wooly mammoth does one thing (I find) and does it really well. You can alter it a bit, but I found there was that one perfect setting I never changed on mine. The BF is flexible and is intended to be able to do 'standard' fuzz, starved fuzz, and Velcro fuzz. If the wooly mammoth is your style of fuzz, this probably won't replace it. But if you're looking for a wide variety of tones, this might do the trick.

The Mammoth is a one trick pony, and even that one trick isn't great. If I can replace it with an even better fuzz then I'll do it in a heartbeat.

i never use them together. I used to use Mastotron as velcro fuzz and Oxide is clean boosted with a bit of dirt (and i keep it in case of emergency, meaning velcro black out).

Just got my Boosted Fuzz in the mail yesterday and have had some time to play around with it, and record a quick demo for you folks out there. I'm by no means a great reviewer, nor am I a man of many words, but what I can tell you is that I was looking for a nice gated, synthy fuzz, and this pedal delivers there for sure. As advertised, it keeps the bottom end, and it has a nice variety of sounds when tinkering with the bias and fuzz knobs. I was really surprised to see almost no reviews or clips out there on this pedal, especially with how popular the Fifth Gear and Ictineo are...so, after getting a chance to play with the pedal and it meeting all of my expectations, I just wanted to get my word out there.

I also love the compactness of it, which is very important for me. I like to keep my board small, and this fits my needs there as well(same size as the Fifth Gear v2). This is my 4th pedal by Southampton Pedals and they've all been winners so far. As Larry David would say, "It's pretty, pretty, pretty good."

I attached a quick 30 second demo. First just playing a famous riff with the fuzz, and then noodling around on a different setting. The noodling part is my Dingwall into the Fifth Gear v2 => Boosted Fuzz => Utility Knife(set to phaser) => Ictineo. So, it's a Canadian wonderland of goodness...you just have to excuse my poor non-Canadian bass playing
