Double Bass NS Design WAV4 megathread part II

I got some sounds of what this sounds like in a live context. Used it a few weeks back with my college's Combo II ensemble. The quality of the recording in the hall isn't the best, so I picked out (IMO) what the best song was overall.

I have to note that this is with the standard strings for the WAV, coupled with a Fishman Platinum into an Ampeg PortaBass 2x10 combo. In retrospec, it sounded pretty legit in the mix...

Curious... does anyone think there would be a problem with using a cello bow with the NS... I know nothing about bowing but I think it would be fun to try it out. Local store's cheapest bass bow $100 but has a used cello bow for $25. I know with an acoustic db it would be awkward with the body; but NS doesn't have much of a body... What do you think?

Hi, I think the cello bow would probably be a little too light. Would be better to get a french bow & some good rosin.

How did you route out the tuner holes to make the hipshots fit in the existing? I just got a set of hipshots in the BG forum and tried replacing one but the existing hole is not big enough. Sandpaper?

That step bit will work well and will give the best result, but sandpaper will also do as the holes only have to be a little bit bigger. Roll some sandpaper around a round object, like a pen. Take care to do it evenly and check in between.

I picked up a used WAV4 recently and I can't put it down. What a cool, fun and easy to play, great sounding instrument.

I have a dozen or so electric basses and have been interested in a DB for some time. I rented a Engelhardt recently and couldn't physically play it. The dimensions just made playing very uncomfortable as I am fairly short.

I am sure my rock bandmates will hate me for buying this as I am dying to play it in a gig environment!

I am hoping some of you use this combo. I recently bought a WAV4 and have been practicing leading up to last night's jazz trio gig. At home, I was able to get what sounded like good bass tone from the Walkabout. At last night's gig, I felt as though the tone was just not right, despite multiple settings. Primarily, I've got the Walkabout dialed in:

Gain 12:00
Bass 1:00
Med: 9:00
Parametric EQ - flat or off
Treble: 7:00 (off)
Master 12:00

On the WAV4 I've got it dialed in with almost no treble.

What I was getting semed to be inconsistent volume across the strings - more boomy in the lower registers, and less volume in the upper registers on the D and G strings. It just to me was not a consistent tone that I seemed to struggle with all night.

Any suggestions?

The WAV is much better with a preamp, even a simple one like the K&K Pure Preamp. Volume difference across strings is still going to a problem, though.

OK, I bought a K&K Pure preamp here in the accessories for sale. Looking forward to getting it and trying it out. I hope this helps in a major way. How do you set your Walkabout settings then? All flat?

I haven't played my wav over a walkabout yet, but used it on quite a few amps now. What I do mostly is leave the amp flat and use the eq on my fishman. I think the eq on the K&K is meant for acoustic guitar, so this won't work for you. What i strive for is a gradual slope in the eq from low to high. This won't cause an uneven response over the fingerboard and won't reduce the sound to a narrow bandwith. For the sound to maintain some acoustic properties you still need some highs and high mids. For these same reasons i didn't like the original tone control on the wav, it's like turning down any note above the C on the G string. Your problem with the volume in the upper registers might very well be caused by that.

I had a quick peek at a walkabout scout: i don't think you have a pre-amp impedance problem. I couldn't find an accurate answer, but as it is a tube pre, and a combo often used for DB: my guess is it has a input impedance of at least 1M, so the K&K won't make much difference.

OK, thanks. Well, I guess I'll try out the K&K Pure anyway. I got a good deal on it here used. I think I'm going to take it in for a set up as well. The action is way too low up high.
