Double Bass NS Design WAV4 megathread part II

I am enjoying my new Wav 4c quite a bit. I am annoyed though by having to fuss with the height of the stand it's on to get it at a good level after moving it. With my upright I simply pulled the endpin out to the 3rd ring and it was set. But with this NS stand there are no markers. Has anyone come up with a way of marking the post that works to quickly find the right setting?

Right, so about 14 years after acquiring a WAV4, I was contemplating selling it. I am currently bandless, and focusing very much on BG, which means the WAV goes virtually unplayed save for the occasional get-together with my ukulele group.

But after some thoughts I decided I will "give it a year" - put in some hours, see if I can make some actual progress on the instrument etc. This also means I am finally going to change the stock strings...

I don't play arco (but have a bow lying around, so I might get into it) so I am looking for strings that will give a deep, thumping URB-ish bass sound.

I've narrowed it down to:

- Daddario J610-3/4M Prelude Bass 3/4
- D'AddarioH elicore HH610 3/4M 3/4 set, medium tension (Hybrid)
- Pirastro Obligato Double Bass 4/4-3/4

Which of these would best deliver the sound I am looking for? And will the stock tuners be able to hold them? I'd rather not replace those - yet.

Additionally, did anyone ever successfully install a preamp INTO their WAV?

I got a Wav4c a few months ago and I'm really enjoying it. I've used it on about 6 gigs and the rest of the band guys seem to like it too. I suggest a K&K pure preamp. They're fairly inexpensive, sounds good with the bass, and you can easily either clip it to your belt, or being so light, you can also just hang it from the plugin on the back of the bass.

A impedance buffer (this is what you want as an internal preamp) works best immediately after the piezo pickup and in front of any EQ or volume control. They are small and should fit inside.

For strings get the NS Traditionals as they are D’Addario Orchestrals made to fit the NS EUBs.

Would it be a quick/easy modification to add such an impedance buffer to the WAV? I (literally) failed my electronics class, the one year I decided I wanted to go in that direction, so I would not be doing it myself. Also, I would not have the faintest idea of where or how to begin 😁

Will check those strings! Thanks.

If you can find a ready made PCB, yes. Input impedance should be between 1 and 10 MegOhms. It is easy to make it lower but needs to replace a resistor (that might be surface-mounted) to enlarge it.
The JFET you typically need is hard to find in a hole-through version now. Otherwise only four parts (optionally a few more) to connect and a battery.
Just disconnect the hot part from the piezo and connect it to the input, connect the output to EQ/volume/output jack, the line you cut before and connect ground to jack ground and battery to ground and power. You might want a switch for power or use a TRS-jack to switch the ground from the battery from R to S.

Since I build my stuff from parts, I have no idea what ready-made PCBs are on the market now.
Check if it will fit inside before you order.

So I have some gigs coming up that I will play my NS Wave 4 on. I like to have a tablet running Mobilesheets for any tunes I need to look at leadsheets for. Rather than having a stand just for the tablet and another for the bass, it would be great if someone came up with a way to modify the NS bass stand so it could also hold a tablet too.,,,

I agree it would be great to have a stand that functions as a tablet holder.

I usually play seated with my iPad on a microphone stand with my microphone… it is a little tricky getting everything situated so can access it.

I may go back to standing when I play to increase my mobility.

But again it would be convenient if the stand would a microphone and a tablet.

I realize your post is a year old now, but just in case this is still relevant, I mark the tripod post with a white sharpie. As I extend the post, as soon as I can see the white mark (a line I drew all the way around the post), I’m good.

I don‘t really need one, but there are hooks for brass instruments that can be attached to the vertical post too which can act as a bow holder.

I haven‘t used my EUB for a while, so I cannot remember if I could use one of the fastening rods for holding the bow, but I bent a d soft metal door hanger hook so I can attach it to my belt and have the bow there (German in my case).
