Double Bass NS EUB megathread

A owner can add pickups to these basses. Think of the WAV 4 as a bass model that can be customized. Myself I like the electronics to be off board as much as possible so I can change them at will. So much changes so fast.

Here is a great player I saw in a small venue with only a few folks. It's well worth listing to this 9 minutes worth of music. At least I think so.

All of a sudden my NS began playing up by sounding like a distortion pedal was in the loop, mainly on the piezo setting but it also sounds 'strange' with the mags. It also goes loud and soft intermittantly. I've tried the batteries, had the back off and can see nothing supicious there.
Any ideas what might be the cause?

I just bought a CR4M, I love it to bits the sound is fantastic.

I have the optional endpin that I prefer to use, and my question is this....

What do others do with their NS bass when not playing it when using the endpin, at gigs and that. I play bass guitar too, and swap between the two throughout the set.

There is an adapter that fits into the standard CR stand that allows you to dock the endpin to it.

I traded my Yamaha EUB in for an NS CR4M, and slung some old Hybrids on it the first day....Better but a bit pangy sounding on the open strings. Today I put a set of new D'Addario Preludes on it - very, very, very dark...almost no mettalic ring on the open strings, bit less sustain (good), lovely attack without any tubbiness. Extremely dark E and A....quite authentically DB to my ear. $99.00 Canadian. You have to shave a little wool off the peg end of the E string only to clear the nut, and bite off the lumpy bit of wool on the very end then its fits the hole in the peg. You have to remove the brass washer on the bottom so it goes through the bottom hole. Otherwise no problems with the fit. Did I say $99.00. So far they don't bow great but....neither do I.

Then I took the Obligatos (solo tuning) off of my AUB and put them on the NS. Even better!

Some news that i read in Ns webpage:

"NS Design is coming out with a great new line of electric bowed instruments.

Designed by Ned Steinberger, the instruments will be produced in the Czech Republic at the same facilities that make NS Design’s flagship CR series of instruments. The new instruments will incorporate the same styling and workmanship as the CR series, but use more cost effective materials and passive pickup technology to bring the price in at midway between the CR and WAV series.

NS design will put the new bass into production first, with additional instruments to follow."

I just bougth a CR5M and like everyone else i wanna change the stock strings ^^
I did read most of this mega thread and some other on this subject and I still need some advices ...

the top strings for this eub seems to be flexocore ; d'addario hybrid ; spirocore & corelli 370.

I'd like to play this bass bowed & plucked as i'am mostly a classical guy who does little jazz but some other electrified music. As i play classical double bass I don't have any problems with the bow but my pizz technique is a bit poor (I have a dream that it's gonna be better with this new EUB at home ^^)

I think i'm gonna choose the corelli 370 but I don't know what to choose between 370 M & 370 F.
any advices ?

The 370M are really thin and floppy, but it depends on your taste and needs.
The 370TX is just about the same gauge as everyone else's mediums, to give you an idea.
The 370M are almost thinner than other brands solo-tuning sets.
Really thin.

The Helicore Hydrids would likely give a warmer tone.

In the Corelli sets, I'd choose the 380M before the 370M. (they're the nickel ones)
They have a warmer tone, less metallic too.
And they're quite affordable.

perhaps you mean swapping the B and E posts in the pegbox?

the CR5 is a 2+3 isn't it?

I swapped the B and A in my 6 for similar reasons.

been looking for the right cab for my nscr5m, and finally found it
by pure chance...
while browsing craigs list one day, i happened upon an ad for a couple eaw cabs, dirt cheap. so cheap i'm feeling guilty.
i had been in need of some small pa speakers for an electronica/
drum n bass project, i jumped on these...

the model is eaw fr 153z
i really was expecting a standard pa cab type of sound,
but was just blown away by what i heard...
they really got it right.
both arco and pizz sound equally fantastic. the horn is really clean and open. lots of articulation with the 6", not nasal at all, and the 15" goes much lower than the rated roll off... i was able to get it to respond nicely to 40 hz eq tweaks without issue at more than adequate volume (running at it's rated 500 watts).
no attenuators, the cab only has it's internal crossover to run by, but i hear no reason to need to change it or pad the treble at all.
the full frequency range arrives in time as it should and blends beautifully... the balance between drivers is really optimized, and the result is quite musical.
the best part, the sound is tight and punchy, as if it was voiced as a bass cab.
no loss for proper sound running a full electronica band mix through 'em either....
not a lightweight rig, but a single at 75 lbs. is actually quite manageable... it is very ergonomic and no where near as bulky as 4x10 size cabs i've used in the same weight class.
(i'll be building a velcroed pallet for wheels).
it is an 8 ohm cab, but has excellent sensitivity and is very responsive at lower volumes.
so far i've run these with a power amp/ mixer combo and a mesa m6 carbine, with equally satisfying results.
i highly recommend giving one of these a try should you ever have the opportunity!

I did change my strings yesterday, (Corelli 380TX) and it is so much better already !

With the 5 strings I don't have to swap E & B as it's a 2 +3, I didn't bought the B strings yet but I will soon.

But since I change my strings I don't have any sound with piezo nob set entirely clockwise (arco mode). I must have disconnected something, any idea what I should do ?

I can't wait to try the arco mode with my new strings ! argghhhh :bawl:
