Number ring for pots

LowWay

It’s got 4 strings ‘cause they’re bigger!

I’m wondering if anyone here knows or can make a ring that would be held in place against the bass body by the pot nut with numbers on it to identify where a knob with an indexing line is pointing?

Does this make sense?

Does anyone know where such a thing can be obtained?

These days, the easiest way to make one would be to have it laser engraved on a piece of thin aluminum. Design up what you want in CAD or graphics software and send it out to a shop that does laser engraving.

There are also these things available all over the web, this pic was grabbed from temu. Maybe a bit industrial depending on your needs.

I like the subtle look of how Wal does it, but putting a small brad into the wood to act as a position indicator:

I like how wal does it too, and I’m going to be using these lnobs in a wal-esque bass, but weight was a concern so I’m using light weight wooden knobs.

Also those rings are the kind of thing I’m looking for. What were your search terms? I couldn’t even find those.

I agree, I’ll need to design and etch some myself I suspect.

Amplifyfun in Portland OR is great for that sort of work, they do both laser etching and UV printing and are very flexible on graphics formats.

This is perfect. I’m getting the new bass in a few weeks, I’ll probably use some ugly panels initially and then see how many I need. I’m thinking only 2-4.

If anyone wants to see the build thread it’s here:

Plus I found this one, which goes to 11:
Clearly the point of going to 11 was to sell the Spinal Tap boyz one that went to 12 next time, 13 the time after that, etc. Keep that revenue stream flowing...

Slap in some 10-turn precision pots with the standard geared dial and you can rawk all the way to 99. And adjust things so, so pre-cise-ly.

Would make a good producer dial connected to nothing, too. Let me just try the mumbo-jumbometer at 62.5 for this take....

Maybe get some Les Paul-style toggle switch washers, flip them, and number them?

Or use guitar knobs (ie: Strat or LP style). I have a Jazz Bass that has black knobs that are Strat knobs.

I use mostly P basses and I normally like the screw in kind of knobs. I orient the max position so the screw is facing me (approximately at the 1:00 position if looking at the bass). This way, I can look down and see the screw on the side and know the V or T is at 10 volume. If I don't see the screw, I know it is turned down a little.
