Nut work

I have a fender jaguar modern player that needs a new but. Unfortunately the most trust instrument store in my area did not have one that would fit it other than a non slotted one. So I bought it the problem is I don't know where to get an affordable flat file for the right size. Does anyone have any place specifically?

I can see where a but without a slot would be a problem. I have no idea what size file you'd need for that.

It would have to be the size of the string gauge. .105-.45

I buy my supplies from Stewart MacDonald in Ohio. They have about anything you would need.

If you want to do it the wrong way, you can do what I have done. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the small file set they have in stock. None of the files are exactly right, but it is possible to file slots cleanly with the round one. It is also possible to completely ruin it if you aren't careful. But they can be made to work.

Out of curiosity, what is wrong with the existing nut? I have both lowered and raised slots on nuts. I have generally only replaced them if they are cracked or broken.
