That is indeed a tort guard. And it’s the thickest tort I’ve ever seen. Like dinner plate thick. Could probably get three guards out of it by modern day standards.

Those strings are an old set of DR fat beams I’d taken off another bass and stashed for an “emergency”. The strings it came with were some ancient rounds of unknown origin. They just screamed, tetanus shot!

Very cool choice - they do have a DR thing going on, very nice! Aside from the expected high frequency clank that all semi-hollow basses of that era had... it sounds quite modern in many ways and could be used as a daily player I think as long as you're not doing any slap god material. You'd need the geddy for that (which is ironic since, I think, Geddy hasn't slapped a day in his life).
If that tort guard is like the old guard plate on my old (long since departed) Vox bass, it's a very deep, 3-D shimmering red /black tort pattern, quite beautiful.
Wow, what a groovtastic tone monster! Makes me think of Lee Jackson of The Nice, who used a similar Vox bass, though I think without all the bells and whistles. Good excuse to post this:
NICE! The NICE!
Man, these guys should have had the fame of ELP - it was exactly the same keith music, same playing style, excellent group musicianship, great drumming and bass playing... great (and same) arrangements... but without the supergroup star pull power for marketing. It sucks because, while I love ELP, I prefer the drumming/bass playing in the NICE to that of some (not all) of ELP's work.... ELP was created and the NICE disappeared... why? because ELP was the NICE with drawing power. I feel so bad for Lee Jackson and the drummer (Forget his name now) who should be as infamous as Greg Lake and Carl Palmer... as a personality I would take Lee Jackson over Greg Lake any day.
Anyhow - yes, awesome bass in this performance....
Hard to disagree with this, even though I love Greg Lake as a singer and bassist. The Nice were obviously the more original of the two bands, practically inventing this kind of classical/rock fusion. They also had more "edge" and a more radical "attitude" than ELP and were, dare we say, just a little less "grandiose" (who wasn't??!!).
Exactly, and yes I Agree about Greg Lake. And I love some of his folky songs that turned into ELP classics. But yes, these guys clearly invented it.
And, interesting to see how all of Keith's keyboard tricks were already in existence in the Nice - he just took that and replaced the two other guys with celebrities. I have zero idea if it was actually he who did it - I know nothing about his business practices... may he R.I.P.
