Double Bass Obligatos Users?

Thanks, Dave! Did you ever try Zyex in medium tension? Sometimes trying the same string in a different tension can alleviate the wolf.

What did you think of the Helicore Hybrids you tried on your friend's bass?

If you have any questions or are curious about samples, you can message me here or reach out to [email protected]
I don’t think Medium Tension is right for me. But thanks, I’ll send you a message.

Hey TBers,

I have a friend who recently got an Obligato E and A with plain gut Evah Slaps on the D and G. His new Obligatos don’t roll like the older ones. I’m wondering if they have changed the formula to get rid of that roll? I’m thinking of getting some Obligato Solos for my King Mortone and tuning them standard tuning.

Wolf Tones happen...get a wolf tone eliminator.

Zyex are great for certain things... They are very punchy, more mid-range then spiros, and can last a while depending on the bass. I have a medium E and a light A on my American Standard. They’ve been on for almost a year, growl for days, and are still super loud and bright. I’ve had Zyex on my Kay and they totally die within 5 months...could be the bass...could be quality control of strings...Who knows? Either way, my current set on my standard sound incredible. Won’t take them off till they brake.

Zyex do not sound good with a bow. Pitch center is sketchy at best. But that’s okay because you can get heliocore hybrids which are kinda like Zyex but much better with the bow.

I’ve always had positive interactions with the folks at d’Addario!

Bringing back an old thread for an answer. Has anyone ever slapped Obligatos? I’m looking for a string that’s pleasing with the bow and able to be slapped.
My personal experience with Obligatos has been they respond very well with the bow and have a nice warm sound. Liked the pizz sound a lot too and thought I had found “the answer”, but what ultimately did them in for me was the lackluster way they amplified on a gig. Wasn’t happening. I can’t speak to how they slap.
