Double Bass Odd exercise from HS teacher

No argument there. It's just that the arbitrary complexity of this thing and trying to put it together on the fly would distract me big time from trying to fix my pitch. But then most kids today are a lot better at multitasking than I am.

I have seen many high school band and choir programs use this sort of exercise, but only the top level ensembles. I have never seen a high school orchestra that could pull it off. The talent pool is generally too small.

Am I the only one who doesn't see any point to this?

I couldn't see the point at first, but as I play it more, I think it has as much utility as just playing scales with the added problem of hearing the half-step shifts as a pattern. It's just something different to develop the ear.
