off I go to Alaska....

My wife has new employment. :rollno:

We are moving (with 4 cats) to Fairbanks, Alaska in late June. I've already been researching on what and what not to do.

Any advice on city living in interior Alaska? I have some experience living in a cold climate (upstate NY) although not -40. :eek:

Yep, and .44 magnum is probably the bare minimum in a pistol Cartridge. In fact most old AK guides only recommend one round in a .44, and that's the 300 grain Buffalo Bore. You need a solid hunk of lead on Brown Bear, and perhaps Polar Bear in Fairbanks.

A !2 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs is a good alternative if you can carry it and still do what you're doing. For short walks, on non-windy days Bear Spray is effective. But the reality is I wouldn't go any distance anywhere in AK without a firearm unless I was with a large group (4 or more ) of people.

In Fairbanks you will need an engine block heater for your car. Four Wheel drive is a given, and a real SUV is probably your best choice. As far as weather, you'll have a Snow pack in Fairbanks almost guarenteed by Mid October. Average winter lows range from -15F to -25F with a record of -60F . Keep Fleece blankets in the car a long with a basic survival kit. A car break down ten miles from the house in Winter could be fatal. It's still "into the wild" up there. But it's a beautiful place.

I don't remember where he exactly was, but it was near or around town, and the wolf was staring him down and wouldn't walk away. When the wolf started to approach to a distance less than comfortable, he shot.

So you're moving in the beginning of summer - I hope you can tough it out during the winter. At nearly 65 degrees N. latitude - it gets real cold with a very short amount of daylight hours in the winter, and visa versa in the summer. The Arctic circle is just barely North of Fairbanks @ 66.3 degrees, but heck - you'll be able to see the aurora borealis up close and personal. I seriously hope you know what you're getting into. Jungle tip :

If a polar bear attacks , stoop swiftly , pick up two medium sized rock-stones and inch up and deftly into his nostrils.
He will forget your presence temporarily in his attempt to remove the foreign bodies.
But ,
Do not wait around, for he will bound after you , and you will not play your trick a second time.
