Just to clarify, the PMRC's problems with W.A.S.P. were not because of their name. It had to do with their song lyrics ("**** Like a Beast"), which is why they had the warning labels put on their albums.
I have had a lifetime relationship with offensive music, but I am not impressed with deliberately offensive band names and I think profanity of any sort on a t-shirt is loathesome.
I would love to hear about the band in the OP getting their faces pummeled at every single show they book. You reap what you sow.

They sure were. And to be clear, I was never offended and always enjoyed them. But today's society is a lot more sensitive to an extreme.
This also just reminded me of a guy I saw in a restaurant who was wearing a shirt from the band Diarrhea Planet. I happen to find that name hysterical (never heard them), but the way the guy was sitting, it looked like he was just wearing a shirt that said "diarrhea."
Well, everyone will take it the way they want to. But for me and the vocalist, its more like killing your demons, false gods, the evil things that ruin ones self, that rule your spiritual being. That pull you down. It's about killing or cutting out the evil within and overcoming that.

Oh so painfully true, and the problem is far too many in our society are trying to push laws protecting people from being offended. Or taking violent actions to silence the offending material / offender. It seems nobody can take a danged joke any more.
seeing "false gods" - does that mean you are a christian band? im an atheist but i dig the band name and meaning dude.
Yeah, that's my reaction. It's adolescent (even the adolescents think it's adolescent), it's not creative, it's not funny, it just makes me shrug and say, "seriously?" Besides which, if it's my band's name, there are circles of people that I wouldn't be able to talk about my band and promote to. Lots of cons and no pros.
Oh no, not in the least. It has nothing to do with religion at all but much more about your spirit. See, to me, religion is for people that don't want to go to hell. Spirituality is for people that have been to hell already and don't want to go back.
We really aren't about religion at all. There's a huge difference from religion to what we are about. My guitarist came up with the name. He just thought it sounded cool. He digs our meaning too, but for him, he wanted a name that symbolized what the music sounded like to him. He said it reminded him of gods fighting and warring. So that's the name he thought of. Me and the vocalist joined on after the name was already birthed. We dug it, so we all stuck with it.
I dont mind offensive names, its just a name. in Black Pussy's case their band and music is really all about love and getting along, not hate. and i like their music.

i heard the US band called Viet Cong had to pull a few gigs recently because of their name. which sounded kind of weird coming from a non-US perspective, but then again i guess there must still be some strong associations there.
i suppose it's the same as someone on TB who had a band called The Birmingham Six - i remember reading that and thinking "yikes, don't come and play round here"...

if black pussy was a band made up of black women or led by a black woman, i would be cool with it. the fact that its a bunch of white guys makes it unacceptable and i won't give them any of my time or money. i have had this conversation with potential band mates in the past when trying to figure out names; i want something eye/attention grabbing but safe for shirt reprinting, but those standards don't really matter to everyone. my friend has a (really great) band called "A F**king Elephant" and prints shirts with no concern.
Most offensive band names are Crucif**cks, an awesome punk band from Michigan who's singers is almost as crazy as Daniel Johnston. Another is Anal C****, a horrible hardcore band from Brighton MA. Their music was downright awful and offensive for the sake of being offensive. They had a song called Conner commited suicide cause Eric Clapton sucks. They got sued for it (well sort of, doubt they had any money).

Yes, you are correct. The name was secondary. Either way they had a huge bulls eye on them which probably didn't hurt them as much as Mrs. Gore would have hoped. Ha!
One of my favorite songs addressing this/these issues is Anthrax' "Startin' Up A Posse". Absolutely hilarious.

Anybody remember a little show called "Married With Children", yeah. The protests to have it removed are a big part of why it became such a hit.
what's not to love from a band with such timeless classics such as "foreplay with a tree shredder", "living colour is my favorite black metal band" or "stayin alive (oi version)"....
Not to mention Windchimes are Gay and You look Adopted, but this will always be my favourite,
