"Offensive" band names

I've been in the same punk band for 16 years, and we definitely fit the bill. I know we've always had trouble booking shows because of the name, but we still manage to find shows, in a couple weeks we're headed from Alberta to Quebec and back for three weeks, and we've managed to fill most of those nights with shows. Of course I've never seen a band name mis-spelled in so many unique and creative ways... On the other hand, we've been able to use the name in interviews on College radio stations (artistic license I suppose) so it's been less of a hindrance, at least here in Canada than you might otherwise expect. It probably helps that we've never had a problem with a venue using any of the A&E alternatives to our name, but by the same token, it's rare that it has ever happened.

Just saying that it is a business. Sounds to me that the name has been more of a hinderance than a help getting gigs, and I suspect that the higher paying gigs are less likely to book the #@$%#$!# !#@$%@#-ers than Huey Lewis and the News, or some innocuous name like that.

You know what I find offensive?
The Black Rhino went extinct and none of these "activists" did a thing. The last refuge of the Mountain Gorilla is being opened for oil exploration and people are bitching about a band's name and thinking they are fighting the good fight. Every large mammal on the planet is in great decline for our way of life.

Dear Youth Activist Culture, PLEASE pull your head out of your self concerned self righteous ass and do something that matters!! You obviously have the necessary passion and drive, now just find some better causes.
(in interest of fairness, I sent the same note to myself!)

Now if youll excuse me, Im going to go listen to the Crucif**ks.

I've been in the same hard rock band "Nephilym" for over 20 years. Did couple side bands along the way. The main side bands that actually gigged was "Memphis Witch" which was a southern metal band and "Move to destroy" which was metalcore. I don't think much of band names. You make the name mean something. I always thought it was a little odd particularly for punk bands to have an "offensive" band name because in away it's like a gimmick and that's just not what rock and especially punk are about imo

I'll suggest that it would be harder for Huey Lewis to get on a high paying local punk gig than us. We play punk, we'd be playing to punks, and Huey just don't get much traction with the counter culture set... Now that completely overlooks that "high paying punk gig" is in a lot of cases, an oxymoron...

And in no way am I trying to imply that an offensive name has been a help, in fact I stated outright that it has been a hindrance. The point being, at least here in Canada, it's less of a hindrance than you might expect. Unless you want to play every small town in the country (which we don't.) an offensive name, in the punk scene, isn't that big a deal. In the cities you're playing a punk show, to a punk crowd, at a punk (or at least alternative) venue, arranged by a punk promoter. Within that world, our name is par for the course, not offensive...

But the simple way to know it hasn't been that much of an obstacle...16 years we've been together. If the name was that much of an obstacle, we would have changed it, or not lasted 16 years...

Yes, it is a hindrance, but less than you might think at first glance.

Hey since there so many are so many of my peers out there and the whole band name came up .can some of you guys help me out .my band mates and I can't seam to agree on a name for our five member all things rock and bluesy edged music sound .We are from 34 to 50 in age.so with that little bit info I would love to some suggestions.

Bands spend far too much time coming up with a name. If nothing else, gather around a table with beer or coffee - drink a few rounds - everybody come up with 1 or two names. Then vote for the name that you want eliminated, whichever gets the most votes is removed. Keep going until you have only one name.

Oh, and did I forget? No leaving to go to the bathroom until a name is agreed upon.

Really?? You would love to hear they were physically assaulted, repeatedly, because of their band name? One that really does not even qualify as offensive??
