Offical B.C. Rich Club!

Most likely stock "B.D.S.M." pickups unless they were replaced but refitted with the original covers. You could contact BC Rich to find out for certain what the bass carried stock.

Just going back in time, but for what it's worth, I eventually did just that and received this response:
BC Rich email said:
Yes, HMG acquired the line in the year 2000, so that instrument would have already been manufactured by a factory other than our factory partners.

We didn't actually start manufacturing with our partners until later that year, as reflected by the serial sequence you indicated, your instrument would have been from stock that was acquired after we purchased the brand. Unfortunately, we have no records on those factory builds, so I would not be able to help you with specifics. Sorry I could not help you at this time.

FWIW, I figured out if I attach both strap ends to the front button it becomes much more pleasurable to play. No neck dive, and it's easy to adjust on that one pivot point to find the ideal hold.

Picked this left handed Warlock up a few months ago. Nix'd the chrome components in favor of black hardware, and fitted it with DiMarzio DP122 pups and D'addario nylon tapewounds.

Where the hell do you guys find these things? I've been searching for a white Paolo Gregoletto signature 5 string for a while, and I simply can't find any that aren't in Asia.

Anyone have a white 5 that they're willing to part with? Hit me up. :D

Bass cover by Caney from Kanowit, Sarawak. Using my B.C. Rich Warlock Paolo Gregoletto Signature Bass 5 String upgrade with Seymour Duncan Passive Phase II Soapbar SSB-5 pickup through Hartke VXL Bass Attack Pre-Amp, Zoom B2.1u, DiMarzio cable and D'Addario string. Apologize for some mistake.

Well, I don't know what y'all think of the late-model Korean stuff... but I'm pleased with my new Mockingbird ST! These are actually the pics from the seller on eBay, just got it today and haven't taken pics yet. I think it suits me as: 1) I'm picking up the bass again after about 15 years without playing, and 2) I've always wanted a Mockingbird but could never justify the cost.

I was watching this auction, but couldn't justify its purchase since I already have a Mockingbird Heritage. Both of my Mockingbirds have relocated front strap pegs for balance. Post a review of this bass' sound and how well it balances when you can.

Ok, as soon as I find the amp to go with it. I WAS going to get an Acoustic B450mkII but... the computer at GC in OKC was having a problem last night. Ok, No problem, I will just get it online. Ummm... they cancelled my order, sold to someone else. So, the search begins again. I really like that amp, I was impressed with the sound with one of those Sterling SUB4 models.

(EDITED, UPDATE) they have another one at another site... actually less $$. Shipping was the same (I suspect this is wrong, we will see if they honor it!)

let us know (me especially) how this feels and sounds, as I am eye-balling one of these myself in a different color!

I recently picked up one of the "black smoke" Mockingbird 5-string basses on Ebay for only $185.00 that's supposed to be a blem (although I can barely see the small scratch on the back). I didn't have any 5-string basses anymore, but figured I should at least have one, and couldn't go wrong for the price. It's a passive bass with an oddly smooth, glass like finish that doesn't gum up like most do. The bass plays well, and only weighs 7.2 lbs! Due to the low weight, the balance isn't as bad as my 10.5lb Mockingbird Heritage, so I decided that it just might be a keeper (unlike my former Mockingbird Heritage 5) and to mod the bass a bit to see how much better it could be. Off came the Chinese lock down bridge and out came the even worse passive mini pot equipped electronics, along with the stock no-name P-style pickups, and on went a brass hipshot A style bridge, and complete active electronics and BC Rich branded pickups out of my Heritage 4. I had to expand the route in the rear to accommodate the extra control and electronics (these come with volume/balance/tone controls, while the active controls are volume/balance/bass/treble), and shielded the cavity with adhesive copper shielding. I also made a new cavity cover from black acrylic, replaced the B tuner with a Hipshot drop D tuner I already had, and threw on a new set of Kalium balanced tension strings with a .136 B. While the bass definitely sounded impressive once set up, I was totally unprepared for how well it sat in the mix and how playable it was at practice last night. I never had any intention of gigging this bass, but now I plan on taking it to all of our upcoming gigs. It was the only bass I even picked up last night, and really added a heavier grind to everything we played. The tone was very much like my old 4001 when running direct for recording back in the 80's, and I also played primarily with my fingers. I'll post some pics tonight. In the meantime, the seller on Ebay is called Pro Audio Star, and has several more of these for sale with free shipping.

Ok, took it up to GC today. I wanted a case (picked up an ABS hardshell that fits it pretty nicely) and some other stuff, including a strap. While I was there I played around with it a little.

So...

Sound:

It is pretty fat and full, quite a bit of punch and a lot of meat to it. NOT growly though, and not much treble. (Pretty much what I expected, passive humbuckers.) A lot clearer IMHO than say, a p-bass, a lot fatter and warmer than anything with single coils. Sounds better (again IMHO) than a Warwick double-buck that I played, despite the Warwick being active and having 2 visually similar pickups. (But that was a used Warwick and may have had something wrong with it.)

I do wish it had a bit more growl and a bit more treble, but I wasn't playing through the kind of amp I bought (it hasn't arrived yet) so I'll see how that all plays out. I'm confident that it will get A sound like like, if not the exact one I was looking for. (And I can always add a cheap preamp if needed.)

Balance:

As expected, neck heavy, but not as bad as some say... but, I have a specific preference (and some might think it is wrong) about playing position. I like it HIGH on my body. when I play sitting I usually cross a leg to bring the instrument up. When standing, I want it about that height... centered just below my sternum. And neck level or nearly so. I found that with a leather strap (grippy!) that I had not problem whatsoever keeping it in that position, primarily with slight pressure from my right forearm.
