Office Bass?

I don't have a specific bass I bring to the firehouse, but never go to work without mine. Sometimes it's my Jazz or Precision, sometimes my Jazz 5er (in a nice hardshell case) for playing in between calls. Just depends on what I'm working on. My vintage Ric never goes...I'm too scared something will happen to it.

I've been thinking about getting something I can just leave in my locker, instead of schlepping one of my nice Fenders back and forth, but it'd have to be $100 or under for a 10-times-a-month bass.

I also have a nice little Fender B-DEC 30 for an amp.

Sounds like SX territory to me. I'm thinking of picking one up to leave at work. Like you, I don't like bringing my 'Wick in. Especially now that the weather is about to turn rainy!

I dunno...I checked my local CL right after posting and there were a few Squier P's in the $100 ballpark. I have never really played an SX, but I'm reasonably certain that Squier necks are similar in feel to my Fenders. Is there anything better about SX?

Tone and appearance, in this situation, are irrelevant. I don't care how it sounds as long as it feels like my basses at home and doesn't buzz or lose it's tuning.

4-stringers under $100, definitely. For a 5, best keep an eye out for a B-stock, or pay the extra $20 for the extra string. (Subscribe to the email specials list for B-stocks).

edit: looks like the 4s are up over $100 now as well. $109 for 4 strings, $119 for 5.

I've brought a couple of basses to work at different points to show to a fellow bass player (who's NOT a TB member despite my best efforts :o).
But in general, I'm not there enough to make me feel OK with leaving one there.

Here's my office bass

etb67 brought up a good point. An acoustic/electric might be a good answer for an office bass. I saw a fretless Dean AEB for like $200 on Guitar Center. Hmmmm...

And I also saw a fretless 5'er J-bass on Rondo yesterday for $109. Pretty close to the $100 mark IMHO.

I don't bring a bass into the office, but I travel a lot for work, and I have a travel bass (a Traveler Escape Mk II).

It has a built-in pre-amp, you can just plug in your headphones, but I usually bring a box to plug it into. I have a Tascam MP-BT1 Bass Trainer MP3 player, it lets you play along with songs, has effects, change keys or slow down or speed up playback.

Or my Zoom B2, it has a drum machine, effects, amp modeling, and runs on batteries.

Sweet set-up. Perfect for travel. I used to have a Tascam for work, but my B-DEC/iPod does basically what your stuff does. I got the amp because I can't sit still when I'm playing. I gotta be up, and headphones lock me to a cord-length away from the source.

Does the bass fit in the overhead for carry-ons? That, to me, is the critical component.
