The connection is not obvious to me.
To keep this non-political, I will say that Thomas, for the sake of his teammates and organization, should have made the trip to the White House. By not doing so, he deflected some of the spotlight that should be on the team onto himself. It is, of course, his right to do that. I agree with the way the Bruins have handled it - by not suspending him and letting it blow over.

I'm a life long Bruins fan (40+ years) and disappointed that Tim Thomas decided that being a member of the Bruins team starts and ends at the ice rink entrance. He should have been with his teammates and not put himself above them. He was being selfish. That said, I'm still a Bruins fan and agree with the Bruins Team deciding to put the issue behind them and move on.
