I was somewhat surprised by the suspension considering nothing was called on ice at the time of the hit. Michalek talked about it after the game, and the apparent disparity in penalty calling between players. Shanahan did good here, and I would have agreed even if it was a Pens player.

The refs have to make calls in a split second, so when a call is in question, it's only natural for the ref to think of previous actions. It can be perceived as a bias, but if you earned the reputation, it's on you to live it down.

Wings get a nice win tonight over the Blues. The Wings have been beating the good teams lately like Chicago and St Louis. I suspect the West (and the league) will be pretty close all season. But I also suspect the Wings will have no problem making the Playoffs for the twenty-first straight year.

I caught all of the STL/DET game last night. The Blues came out and took it Detroit in the first. Babcock said something in that locker room during the intermission because the Wings came out the rest of the game and took it to the Blues physically.

The Kronwall PP goal was sweet. I don't remember Howard being as good as he is now. As a backup to Osgood, he seemed like a step down before. Not anymore though. He made some huge plays last night.

Props to Backes for crashing into the crossbar to avoid a collision with Howard when Jimmy went down to cover the puck. Too many other guys would have just piled on him. Classy move by Backes.

The connection is not obvious to me.

To keep this non-political, I will say that Thomas, for the sake of his teammates and organization, should have made the trip to the White House. By not doing so, he deflected some of the spotlight that should be on the team onto himself. It is, of course, his right to do that. I agree with the way the Bruins have handled it - by not suspending him and letting it blow over.

I respectfully disagree. There aren't many moments where a man gets an opportunity to make a stand for principle like that one. And many would have just gone and been taken in by the pomp and circumstance. I thought his statement was concise and avoided personal attacks on the WH or a political party. To me its similar to the Awards shows accept Thomas handled it far classier than most actors would have.

Nicely done Tim Thomas! Poorly handled by the Bruins by not letting the White House know ahead of time I think. WH kind of got blind sided by it I read.

Now the question is raised by writers like Greg Wyshynski (Puck Daddy) anout the contract specifying that players must:

"(d) to co-operate with the Club and participate in any and all reasonable promotional activities of the Club which will in the opinion of the Club promote the welfare of the Club and to cooperate in the promotion of the League and professional hockey generally,

"(e) to conduct himself on and off the rink according to the highest standards of honesty, morality, fair play and sportsmanship, and to refrain from conduct detrimental to the best interest of the Club, the League or professional hockey generally."


Wyshynski really thinks Thomas failed on all accounts. I don't think he does. Evidently the Bruins are backing Thomas and not suspending him and respecting his decision.

Classless by Tim. I've always had respect for him, lost some today. If the president invites you, you go. I was impressed how the president after being snubbed by him still talked greatly about tim. And how bad had tim been hurt by the economy, none. It was just like actors opening thier mouths, they are disconnected and selfish. Disappointed Timmy.

Given what was said in his statement, I'd guess he has a line drawn in the sand re: the gov't & going to this love-in at the WH would have crossed it & he would have considered it hypocritical of himself. Just a guess.

It's not like Obama is some iron fist dictator committing genocide across the country.

So he doesn't agree with what he has done. He doesn't have to. But at least respect the position. What he did was classless and dumb. I hope this doesn't start a trend. Could you imagine every time a major sports team wins a championship, all the democrats of the team skipping if we have a republican president, and vice versa?

All kinds of good games tonight. I love Tuesdays during hockey season. Come on now Winnipeg, knock off the Rangers! The Pens are in for a challenge tonight if the Blues come after them like they did in Detroit last night. Having Letang back helps, but the Pens just don't answer the bell when challenged with physical play.

It feels like the Bruins are going to run over the Caps. Maybe they should have Obama sit right behind the Bruins bench wearing a Rask jersey. :)

I just read that Ovechkin took himself out of the all-star game since he is suspended. Seems like a noble move, but maybe he didn't want to freeze his butt off in Ottawa?
