Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Puck Drop

Wish I had seen the Caps/Pens game today (stupid band practice)... sounds like it was a fun one. Malkin won it in OT to continue his insane production this season. In addition to Malkin, Ovechkin, Neal, and Semin all put up multiple points. If memory serves, the Caps and Pens have split the season series, and may well see each other in the playoffs (I believe both teams will be there).

The Pens were very fortunate to slip away with the extra point. Someone left Malkin alone on the back door, or I think the Caps would have pulled it out. Sure, I'm happy for the win, but it was sloppy after the Pens got up 2-0. Multiple times, the Caps caught the Pens on bad shift changes and sleeping on defense.

I thought the Bylsma timeout was very well placed, and he seemed to get all the matchups he wanted using the last change at home to his advantage. At this point, Malkin is playing out of his mind and I think probably the best player in the world right now. Him and Neal are nearly unstoppable together during this recent run. I know it won't last forever, so hopefully they can fire it back up come playoff time. The return of Letang is huge, much more than I expected.

I'd like to catch a couple more Red Wings games to see who is sparking that run out there besides Howard. Hopefully it's Z.

Oh.....that Ovechkin goal was flippin' sweet. I don't think I have the Nerve to get between him and a goal.

Hilarious photo on the Flyers Facebook page...

Flyers had a photo taken with their dads right after the game, an annual tradition this time of year. If you float you mouse over Bryzgalov, people tagged him with "I can't stop anything", "I couldn't catch a cold", and "I f__king suck". In the comments, someone renamed him Willya Givesagoalup.

After his sorry performance in today's game, I'm ready to post some nasties.

Then again I'm surprise with how good Hartnell was playing, he wasn't thrown out there for the shootout. Laviolette? Whats up with that???

Flyer fans always deliver. Your team is just fine. It's not like they lost to some chump team after being up 5-0. You're #4 in the east. Speaking of Philly, seems like Giroux fell off the map. Maybe he has some issues still related to the head injury a few weeks ago?

So far, the COL/ANA game is enjoyable. This weekend sure was some great hockey on national TV. Good for the sport.

Well, he (Giroux) did have 3 assists today, as well as a goal in the shootout. But you're right in the sense that he can't seem to score any goals of late. I blame the haircut. He seemed to have more confidence when he had a bit of the Hartnell-esque locks flowing out of his helmet. ;)

When the game went into OT, I told my wife, "If the Flyers can't win it in OT, they'll lose in the shootout. Book it." They just can't seem to beat anybody in a shootout. I have more confidence in Bobrovsky than Bryzgalov, but not even all that much with Bob. Shootouts just seem to bring out the worst in Flyers' goalies.

Hartnell has really upped his game lately, and he's playing a lot smarter hockey than in past years. He's not taking the stupid penalties he used to take.

No worries, he only posts to complain about the lack of Red Wing talk, then disappears for a few weeks. :)

Just saw that Ference got suspended for three games, and the Bruins promptly called up someone to replace him. How about not allowing those call-ups for suspended players? I believe fellow thread contributor warwick.hoy brought this up before. I like it.

I see Subban got popped $2,500 for his slew foot on Kunitz Friday. Add a zero at the end if you ask me.

-Mike

Nah, that's the going rate. Marchand got tagged with the same fine earlier this season for a slew foot, so it is nice to see a little consistency in the punishment.

I think Marchand is capable of changing his game such that he remains a pest but stays on the right side of the law. I have less confidence that Subban will. Marchand, at least admits when he's gone over the line and will stand up and take whatever on-ice retribution is due - Subban strikes me as a punk - he can dish it out but turtles when called on it.

The sooner the instigator rule is off the books, the better the NHL will be.

It may be the going rate, but it needs to be going higher. :)

Letang got added to the all-star roster as an injury replacement, so I'm happy.

Happy to see Goligoski cash in at Dallas. He's getting plenty of ice time there, which he was never going to get as a Pen.

Maybe next year for the higher rate, unless we get a repeat offense from Marchand or Subban - I could see a 2nd or 3rd offense getting up to 25k.

Is anyone else besides these two on Shanahan's list of players who will get no slack because they have been guilty so many times in the past?
