Yeah, I read in a few places how they are supposed to be great replacement speakers for old SVT cabs. I couldn't afford the eminence 100 watt speakers. Not 8 of them anyway. I don't know who else makes 32 ohm 10" bass speakers. Didn't really look into it. These only handle 50 watts each for a total of 400 watts which is plenty for the 300 watt head. I think the original speakers only handled 240 watts total so you needed 2 cabs to handle the power. I haven't had a chance to really crank it but I am much happier with these than what was in there when I got the cab. It really sounds great. I also have a V4-B going thru an Ampeg 610hlf cab that sounds great and a bit more portable. I posted pics on page 35 but my gear has changed quite a bit since then. I will get some new pics up soon.

Electro-Harmonix also makes SVT speakers, but like the Eminences, they suck. I have yet to find anything that compares to the CTS's they used back then, but the Mods are something I'd love to try. For a while, Ampeg was using Edens as an upgrade speaker, but I don't know if Eden makes them anymore.
BTW, Psycho Bass Guy thinks Ampeg was being conservative with the CTS's power handling. I'm not sure myself, but I've cranked that sucker up really loud and never had a problem with the speakers.

I'm going to take a look at the speakers I took out of the cab and see if any of them are actually the CTS originals. Maybe I can sell them on Ebay or something. I really wonder if all those speakers were 32ohm. I guess try to find out about them from the codes if I can. I know at least 1 didn't have any codes at all.
AT the time (the 1970s) 4x10s were not the cabinet of choice for bass players. The V4B head's mate was actually the fridge-sized V4B with its 2-15" Altec 421s (or later, EVs). If you dug the sound of smaller speakers, you went to an SVT or a V4 4x12 guitar cab with the optional Altecs. I stumbled on to the B40 connection quite by accident. Unfortunately, it came to me empty, so I loaded it with the only quad of 10s I had - Peavey Scorpions. They are not bad as all-purpose drivers, but they certainly aren't dedicated bass speakers. It's still a good-sounding rig, though...
Thanks. I was thinking. How often do you actually get to play an SVT cranked up to "10" anyway. I'm sure the 240 watts would have been fine if it meant having the better (CTS) speakers. I'm sure Psycho is right about their rating too. He knows his stuff.
i used to use an ampeg PR 410hlf with an ashdown head
but now i run with an SVT 2 pro head with an svt 410hlf and an svt 410HE on it!

Perhaps outclassed by todays ultralight rigs, It's still a great set of American Ampeg equipment gives enough volume for most gigs with incredible portability.
I schlepped it around on public transportation for years in college before I had a car, and it never let me down. I've since purchased a larger rig, (Carvin 810 and Traynor YBA200)but the Portabass gear serves as my practice rig, and still does 90% of all my gigs.

Just added a BA112 to my arsenal. Wow, this little baby's got tone in spades. Way better sounding than any other B series Ampeg I've ever heard, and I've had a few. Sounds more like the Rocket bassamps than the amps in it's own series. I think I've got a winner, finally. Been through several small practice amps in the last couple of years, this one will end the search.

No vinyl left, top left speaker missing, replaced screen which is wearing out again.
I have managed 7 states with it. Before me Citizen Kane owned it, and before that Black Sheep toured a bit. It will be it's final owner. True Love. The head I use is a GK. shhh.
