Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

Nice job on the porting, bro. Going to pursue the rattle anymore? You could likely eliminate it.

Thank you!

I think I am going to leave it. It really sounds quite good. The only time I can hear the grill is when I play very loud and at only a couple of notes. The stock grill on the top cab can also be heard at this force. Being this is just the extension cab, it would not be likely be used for recording and I don't think I would hear it live. I do reserve the right to change my mind though;)

Nice to be adventurous once in a while. I get things upside down and backwards all the time and I don't need the influence of beer.

The horn on the B18x is working alright? Was you speaker guy able to repair the leads on the broken one?

I wonder if some felt under the grille cloth would solve your flapping problem. You can also try tightening up the cloth with a hair dryer.

I still have the replacement horn installed in the top cab. My speaker guy has not gotten back to me with the original yet - I don't push any timetables with him as he gives me the "friend" rate (you may remember that he is the one who re-coned the speaker in my HB-15).

I don't think the grill cloth is "flapping" per se - there is just so much concentrated air that I think it is making wind noise through the cloth. The cloth is about a half inch away from the baffle board now. The spacers are almost completely under the front picture frame. I will give it some more listening soon.

As my car mechanic would say, that gonna be a big job.

At the very least you can have someone press around the grille when you are playing those notes to try to see if you can dampen the vibrations. It could be so many things. The wiring harness, loose plys in the wood, an amp mount, etc.

The frame is what the baffle board is screwed to on this model.

You know, I had planned on testing the cab before installing the grill cloth and I simply forgot to do it :/ Now there are about 200 staples in the thing.

I think the only thing worse than all the stapling involved in installing grill cloth is having to remove it all and do it again.

The first time that I plugged into one, I thought that it was the best bass amp that I ever heard. I still think that. There is nothing better than sitting in front of one in a quiet room and playing. Amazing tone.
This is the first time I have had the chance to be in a quiet setting with it. Played for an hour and a half. Changing the volume, bass and treble controls around. It really is amazing. I've finally found that sound I have always wanted.

Newb to the world of Ampeg. Does this qualify to learn the ways and the secret handshake of the club? If so, can I get a numba?
