Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

Ah, we all do foolish things in our youth. The speaker in my
B-18N was damaged....OK, there was no cone left at all when I got the amp so I just threw that old speaker in the trash bin ... duh...re-cone? whats that? OK so I know better now.
Can anyone tell me what would be a good replacement for that old 18" speaker? It has a JBL 15" at the moment and it lacks warmth and depth. I am a guitar player, but I would like to hear some of that warmth that I've heard from other B series amps in the past. :cool: thank ye'all fellow noise makers!

Right side port here...

I was wondering how many SB-12 owners in this club actually use the latches on their amps in the way they were intended -that is, to conduct output signal to the speaker.
I use mine in that way nearly every day, in fact I've never put a jack on the cab. The amp doesn't leave the house, however. It stays set up in my music room, so the latches don't get opened and closed repeatedly. Also, I replaced the weather-stripping to get a good seal and a good connection. No problems for the past half year or so.

So - who connects the speaker through the latches?

To all Portaflex Lovers...I'm back in the fold!

Just purchased a '64 B-15N from a gent on the internet and hopefully should have it sometime next week. I'll post good pics when it gets in. Cab is in ok shape...head looks to be in good shape.

SUPER EXCITED!!! I've been without a Portaflex for over a year and a half since I sold my B-18N.

I've been toying with the idea of getting an extension cab for my '67 B15N. What is the easiest way to add an extension cab? I'd like to get a matching cab with the black covering with gold piping, but, other than buying another B15N, I have'nt seen any- they all seem to be the Blue diamond stuff. Any ideas? What is the proper way to add an extension cab,if I can't find an Ampeg replica?

j, the best thing in your case would probably just to wait an orphaned cab out on ebay or craigslist. they pop up occasionally. or maybe mark can make you one in black tolex that sort of looks like your 67.

Mine came with non-standard latches fitted that had replaced the orginals, but they were still being used to conduct the signal.

Just last night I installed new latches and weather stripping from fliptops.net, as well as a logo to replace the one that was missing when I bought it, plus new corners, handle, correct knobs and cabinet feet.

I've wired it up again using the latches for the speaker signal, and with the new weather stripping the latches are a nice tight fit. My SB-12 will be living at home other than the occasional outing to the recording studio, so I'm happy to keep using the latches rather than retrofitting a 1/4" jack.

Tonight I'll be fitting a new Jensen C12N, which will complete my mini-restoration program. This is the SB-12 a few pages back that came someone had stuck black tolex all over and fitted side handles. The transformation back to the real thing cosmetically has been pretty easy really.

I build a new lid for mine. I didn't install a handle. Makes it nice for stacking. If you do find a used cab and want to build a lid, measure it very carefully. The old cabs tend to be out of square. You also have to allow for the additional thickness of the tolex and glue if you are covering it. I had to build two before I got it right.

Plug in the main cab as usual. For the extension cab, you need an 8 ohm cab, it plugs into the 1/4" external speaker jack on the back of the B-15.

I found my B-15R by putting an ad here on TB in the "wanted" section. Eventually, a nice person put me onto a store that mailed mine to me after a quick and easy credit card transaction.

I'm putting up an ad for a B-15R extension cab tonight, but I'll probably end up buying one from Fliptops. Those extension cabs seem pretty rare.
