If the bass stops humming when held at certain angles, it's pretty certain that something is picking up rfi from the room, and at certain angles it's being picked up less, probably because the "antenna" part of the circuit/pickups etc are end-on to the rf source, which makes the level lower.
So it's probably a case of "more sheilding needed", which I'm surprised at because my ATK is pretty quiet, and I usually practice in a noisy room electrically speaking.

I'm going for a bright sound with my ATKs. My 305 is strung w/ DR High Beams. Playing feels weird b/c I'm used to coated nickel strings. Initially it feels like I'm playing a brillo pad, but I get used to them after playing for a short while.

My 750 is strung will the same type of Elixirs that it came with. The Elixirs are bright and maintain their sound for a long time. They still sound good even when the coating peels off from my pick attack (I mostly play using my fingers).

I'm going to try d'addario's pro steels for my next string change.

ATKs have a pretty nasty jack design, basically it's a 3 pin design (if you've ever had to open the whole back section then you'll have noticed this probably) but the contact arm things seem to have a habit of getting loose and not making connection after a while. I'm on my 3rd jack now, the other 2 were ones I got from Ibanez, but this 3rd one the tech that did the work to put the J cavity in my ATK got one that seems to feel a bit more solid then the replacement I got from Ibanez did. Anyway that certainly worth checking out, cos I've been through the whole bass only working at certain angles/with the jack pulled really tight or really slack through my strap/etc etc thing for a good while in my ATK playing due to the enclosed jack design.

My ATK fits in one of those fairly shapeless P & J cases pretty well, not precisely cos of the way the headstock is angled but it's a good enough fit and won't damage your bass. Unless there's a Fender case which is specifically for the contours of a P that I haven't seen, most the Fender ones I've seen have been multipurpose for any Fender bass.

Sweet thanks man. yeah i have a p case thats from the 80's it fits jazz and p abss with ease i have had some others in it. I wanted a change from the fender image and sold them and just got an ATK new for 303$ so i wanted to keep my P case and not have to sell it and buy something else.


I cant find any good 750QM pics in these ATK threads so i guess i'll try to take some when i get mine

I think the only differences other then the truss rod adjustment are that the preamp is setup in a more sensible modular fashion and the quality control isn't as good, there are good new Indonesian instruments but there have been people saying theirs isn't great, something I've never heard about an old 90s Japanese one. The majority seem to be happy with theirs though, especially given the prices some of them go for.

I have an ATK305 Indonesian model from '07 that I bought recently off eBay. I also have an ATK300 made in Korea in '95. The most apparent difference is in the finish coat on the necks. The 300 has a thick lacquer gloss finish, and the 305 has a satin finish. The 305 electronics are very smooth, and has great diversity in tone. My bass instructor played it for awhile and was very impressed with the sound and feel of the bass. He plays an expensive Yamaha 5-string, which costs about a $1000 more than the ATK, so the fact that he liked it so much made me feel good about buying it. I should mention that I haven't done any adjusting to the action, or intonation, and it sounds great right out of the case.

As with all basses in this price range, you may have to make some adjustments, and change the strings to suit your style, which is something we all do. But, I think the ATK's are a great bass for the money. My only regret is I'm lefthanded, and can't find a lefthanded ATK305. The ATK305 I recently bought is a righty, which if I can't find a lefty, will one day be parted out and put on a lefty body that I'll have to make myself!

Buy one, you'll be glad you did. I get lots of compliments on my Amber colored '95, and especially because of that big, chrome plated pickup/bridge guard. That's why I bought it. It gets noticed for both!

Tommy, there is a guy in Canada on utube who has one. His name is Pudsey (or something like that..I'm on my phone so I can't check it right now). Anywho...he is/was a TBr too(I don't remember his handle here).
On youtube, search for "Fender" "ATK" & "fretless"...he will come up A/B ing a fender and an Atk fretless. That will also lead to more of his ATK videos. He did a good job, so check 'em out when you get a chance.

Can't imagine it's too comfortable, but the do look £$^%$&%ing awesome as reversed.

Does anyone know any good free hosting sites by the way? Got a way of recording my modded ATK as a clean DI, and actually by itself instead of in a band mix like the last clip I posted.

I haven't reversed it yet, as first, I don't want to drill a hole in it yet, and I have several friends who are eager to try it out.

I'm actually trying to get better at playing it strung as a righty, so I can grab a righty bass anytime and be able to play. So I'm taking my time before I decide to flip it, or make a new body for it. My concern with flipping it lefty would be how it would balance without the extra horn length. Got to figure something out though, as I love the tone, and the black sparkle paint job!
